Allow app notifications in do not disturb?

I see how you can allow calls to go through in do not disturb mode, but is there a way to allow app notifications?

I'm considering using HomeKit and I'd like to get a door sensor for when one of my boys comes downstairs in the middle of the night. However, I turn Do Not Disturb on at night and I'm concerned that there isn't a way for me to configure my phone to make an audible alert if the door sensor is triggered.

It seems like folks might want this feature for general security reasons, too. Is the only option really to disable all notifications EXCEPT my door alarm?
