Macbook 12 battery drain in sleep

Hi,

I purchased a new Macbook 12 with Yosemite. I immediately updated it to El Capitan 10.11.0 from App Store.

Then I noticed that my Macbook loses about 6-9% every 6-8 hours in sleep mode!

The recent update to 10.11.1 didn't help. I installed only Chrome and Thunderbird. Blutooth is turned off. Power Nap is turned off, No USB devices, no mouse.

Wi-fi is turned on. FileVault 2 is used with password.

Activity Monitor doesn't show any problems with energy for any applications.

pmset -g shows the following configuration:

standbydelay 10800

standby 1

womp 0

halfdim 1

hibernatefile /var/vm/sleepimage

powernap 0

gpuswitch 2

networkoversleep 0

disksleep 10

sleep 1 (sleep prevented by AddressBookSourceSync)

autopoweroffdelay 14400

hibernatemode 3

autopoweroff 1

ttyskeepawake 1

displaysleep 10

acwake 0

lidwake 1

However pmset -g log shows a problem. For some reason my Macbook wakes up every 1-2 hour:

Created MaintenanceWake "mDNSResponder:maintenance"

Any help please?

If the Mac goes into standby, wifi is turned off, so I guess will be grey for a short while when you wake it up. It connects quickly though right?

I don't really understand the behaviour in your log. It looks like it sleeps when you close the lid and then stays asleep until you raise the lid hours later. What should happen is that it goes into sleep, then wakes up after 3 hours to enter standby. However, I notice that you still had AC connected when you closed the lid. So do another test with the Mac on battery when you close the lid, and send the log again.

To send the log, you can use the mouse to highlight all the relevant text in the Terminal window and then copy it, just like you can any text in any app. Then you can paste that text directly in your reply here.

Can you also copy and paste the results of the command "pmset -g"?

Jan 29, 2017 2:19 AM in response to Stephen Dawson1

Okeym thanks for your help! I'll do that later today and send you the results. About wifi, yes it is greyed out and it reconnects like 2 secs after so no issues with that, but before of modifying the text files, the wifi was on and connected when I opened the lid.

Another thing I noticed, is that when I've opened the lid this morning, it took about 2 secs before the display turned on again (I suppose that this is because the Mac was in deep sleep state ), but when I let the Mac overnight and plugged, the display turns on inmediately after I open the lid , so plugging the mac prevents it from entering to deep sleep ? Thanks

Here you got the pmset -g results:

Yes, what you have noticed is to be expected. Before applying the fix, wifi was left on all the time in order to service the tcpkeepalive session for the Apple push service. After the fix, once the Mac is in standby mode wifi is off. Also, there is that slight delay when waking from standby. But when on AC power, the Mac will never enter standby, so always wakes up very quickly.

pmset -g results look normal.

The user mzaur previously showed in this thread that behaviour in 10.12.3 may be different. There doesn't seem to be any wake after 3 hours to go into standby, at least not that's shown in the pmset logs, which is what your logs show too. I will back off the fix some time today and see what happens with 10.12.3. Do you know if you still had wake/battery problems after you updated to 10.12.3?

Jan 29, 2017 1:49 PM in response to mzaur

I mean the not going into standby at all issue. I still edited plist file. I don't know if 10.12.3 completely fixes the issue. Did they remove enhanced notifications? I'm curious to revert plist to default and see. But the fact is if your Mac is waking up due to notifications then it'll affect battery life

Here are my logs from this morning ( with the modification applied ) and today I've lost 8% en 9hours, what is going on ?

You can back all that up can't you? Not sure about Ableton but you can use something like Dropbox to backup files

Unfortunately otherwise you'll have to wait for Apple to fix it

You could backup to Time Machine and then reinstall MacOS and see if that even fixes it. It did for me but your situation may be different.

Can also try Genius Bar

If there is a way to backup all of my files and then restore them after doing a clean install I would try it, but I'm pretty new to macOS and I've never done anything like this before. About the Genius Bar, I've talked to them about this issue but they haven't acknowledged it, they said that the drain was happening because of my WiFi config lol

I'm going to let the mac sleep overnight again and I will post again tomorrow morning the pmset logs. Then, I'm going to revert the changes made to the plist file and I will post the logs, maybe you'll see what is wrong..

Thanks!

There's a lot going on here!

I backed off the fix and tested overnight. The Mac is back to its old behaviour. Lots of unexplained ARPT/Network wakes and 2-hourly wakes for the tcpkeepalive session. 10.12.3 doesn't seem to have changed anything for me. in 14 hours, I lost 4% of battery. Not terrible, but completely unnecessary.

Igor - did you update to 10.12.3 or do a clean install? It could be that you were suffering some other problem that 10.12.3 fixed.

mzaur - you're now running 10.12.3 with the fix right? And you just see the wakeup after 3 hours to go into standby, then the wake up when you lift the lid?

Nacho - If you have a Time Machine backup (or maybe 2 to different drives to be on the safe side), you can install MacOS fresh and I believe it will ask you whether you want to restore your data from a Time Machine backup. You can then restore all your applications and data from that backup, without restoring the actual OS. From your last log, it seems as though your Mac never goes into standby. mzaur suffered from this problem too, before he did the OS install. However, I would try a couple of things first. Back off the fix. I hope you just took a copy of the plist so you can just reinstate it. Also, go into Energy Saver prefs and click on Restore Defaults for both battery and power. Tell me, if you close the lid and open it after only 5 minutes, does it come back almost instantly, whereas if you leave it for a few hours it takes longer? I'm just confused by that last log, and it's not helped by the fact that the terminology seems to change from Mac to Mac. Yours says "Wake from Safe Sleep [CDNVA]", mine (12" Macbook) says "DarkWake from Deep Idle [CDN]". I think Safe Sleep is the same as Deep idle, meaning it's just in sleep mode (not standby/hibernate) with the Ram written to disk in case of power failure. Can't be sure though...
