iTunes Won't open- audio configuration issue

So I upgraded to 7.0.2 and now iTunes won't open. I get to the agreement screen, hit Agree and then I get this message:

iTunes cannot run because it has detected a problem with your audio configuration

Tried repairing, removing, and reinstalling. No go.

I updated all my sound card drivers and it still give me this error.

iTunes cannot run because it has detected a problem with your audio configuration

that one is typically caused by a problem with your QuickTime. (itunes uses QuickTime for audio and video playback.)

so let's first try swapping out your QuickTime.

head into your Add/Remove programs. uninstall QuickTime.

Next, we’ll manually remove any leftover program files and folders.

1. On the Start menu, click My Computer (or double-click My Computer on the Desktop).

2. In My Computer, open Local Disk.

3. Open Program Files.

4. Right-click on the QuickTime folder and click Delete from the shortcut menu.

5. Navigate to C:\Windows\system32\.

6. Remove the files QuickTime.qts and QuicktimeVR.qtx.

7. Restart your computer.

next, we'll get a fresh copy of QuickTime into your PC by doing a repair install of itunes.

switch off antivirus and antispyware applications prior to the repair install.

go into Add/Remove and select itunes. click "Change" and then click "Repair".

if the repair install goes through okay, restart the PC and try launching itunes again. does it launch properly now?

I followed the instructions from b noir and I still have the same error message...."Itunes Detected a Problme with Your Audio confguration"

hmmm. is your QuickTime currently launching fine, GoingHome? or are you getting an error message of some kind when you launch it?

if you're getting an error message, what does it say?

QuickTime appears to be luanching okay!

okay, we'd better check then to see if this is a systemwide problem on your PC, or if it's associated with a specific XP user account.

here's an experiment. (the experiment isn't a cure in itself, but it can give us a heads up on possible cures.)

head into your user accounts control panel and create a new user account with full administrative rights. (there's help documentation on how to do that at the left of the control panel screen.) while you're in that control panel, switch off "fast user switching" in your logging-on preferences.

now log out of the old account and log into the new account.

does itunes launch properly from inside the new account?

I obtained the same exact message subsequent to the creation of a new account with full admin rights.

so it's a systemwide issue on the PC.

okay, let's check to see if it's being produced by a conflict with a Windows Startup item. try seeing if you can get a proper launch after a selective startup using MSCONFIG, as per the following document:
