Cannot create folder on external drive using El Capitan on Macbook Pro.
The option to create a new folder does not appear. Works fine on the iMac desktop running Yosemite. Thank you.

What is the format of the external HDD?
Ciao.
Windows NT Filesystem. I can write and create files on my iMac YOSEMITE but I cannot on the Macbook EL CAPITAN. I am a recent convert from PC (25 years) to MAC (3 months) so I am a novice but I am really struggling to understand how you guys get anything done with these machines. I formatted the drive for both Windows and MAC. Thanks OGELTHORPE.
If it is NTFS the device is formatted for Windows. The format is readable, but cannot on a Mac. To write to the device, you must either reformat it (erasing all the contents) or install third-party software to enable write access to NTFS. The software you may have installed for that purpose is incompatible with El Capitan.
Look for El Capitan compatible Paragon or Tuxera applications.
Ciao.
Strangely enough I could create folders on the external drive prior to upgrading it to EL CAPITAN. Are you saying then that there is a bug in the EL CAPITAN operating system or with the original App software that formatted the drive? Either way what a nightmare. There is no way the Apple software engineers would create an upgraded OS which would cause thousands of drives to stop functioning properly. So the ultimate question is why is Apple creating OS's which are breaking applications and why are applications allowed to run on the OS which can be broken?
PS I have identified two file formats Windows NT File System (NTFS) and Windows NT Filesystem. They seem to be different, the first one I can only read information from and the second one I can read and write to the disk with the YOSEMITE iMac. So there are at least two flavors of windows formats.
I have 3 terabytes on a 4 terabyte drive. Looks like I have to buy another drive and attempt to transfer the data to the new drive and format the old one. Someone please tell me this is not true. I can only describe this as hitting the drive with a caveman club. Anyway thanks for your help OGELTHORPE.
What I am saying is that the change to El Capitan made the third party software that allowed a Mac to write to a NTFS drive incompatible. You will have to update that software:

Ciao.
Ah, I see, OK great I will look into this. Thanks it is slightly more clearer.
