Q: Final Cut wrong keyboard layout

Hello everyone, I ordered a new 5K iMac, which arrived yesterday. I ordered it with the new Magic Keyboard with the German layout. Whilst using Final Cut Pro X, I noticed that if I pressed Z to zoom in or out of the timeline, it would give me the "funk" sound effect as if I had pressed an invalid key. I opened the Command Editor and found that it was displaying QWERTY, and I have no idea how to change it to QWERTZ. In System Preferences, I have selected German, and all the keys are properly recognised by the OS.

Is there a reason, why the Command Editor would see my QWERTZ keyboard as QWERTY, despite everything being set correctly in System Preferences? I have trashed preferences and even uninstalled and reinstalled Final Cut, without luck.

Thanks a lot for your help in advance!

FCP X shows me whichever keyboard layout is currently selected. I activated the German layout, and did Final Cut Pro->Commands->Customize.

Here it is showing the German layout:

If I change layouts and do to the Commands window again, it shows the new layout.

It does not change "on the fly", i.e., if I switch to a different layout when the above window  is already open, though.

Hi Luis Sequeira1, thanks a lot for your reply. Here is a screenshot of the open command editor, and system preferences. As you can see, I have selected German in System Preferences, and it is also selected in the Command Editor, however, the layout remains as QWERTY.

    A few ideas:

    1) Clear preferences: start FCP X holding down the command and option keys, and confirm.

    2) It appears that you have only the German keyboard layout activated in your system. You may try adding another keyboard layout, and switching between the two to see if it has any effect.

I cleared the preferences, and tried again. No change, it's still QWERTY. I then added a French keyboard layout, and selected it (still stuck on QWERTY). I also created a new admin user and opened the command editor (it was QWERTY, and I had selected German in system preferences)...

    Hi Moritz,

mal von der anderen Seite …

do a right-click on FCPX in Finder, select 'Show Package'

    Bildschirmfoto 2015-10-25 um 03.54.57.jpg

dig deeper: Content, Ressources … do you notice a folder de.Iproj?

if not, purchase/download FCPX (again) from the Appstore, only legal source for FCPX

and don't use any 'system-optimizers', such as Monolingual or like that ....

    Hi Karsten,

I navigated to the folder, and the folder is there (see screenshot). I have redownloaded Final Cut at least twice from the App Store. I might also mention that as this is a brand new Mac, I used the opportunity to do a clean install, so technically, everything should be fresh (I also downloaded apps from the App Store, as opposed to copying them from Time Machine).

Thanks a lot for your help and advice; it is very much appreciated!

sooo - app is fine, .....

If the Mac is brandnew why a clean install at all??!

    How did you perform it?

Obviously, the 'communication' btw OS and app is broken.

Let's give fCPX a slap on the backhead:

    quit FCPX (if running)

    hold cmd-alt and launch FCPX

    >> resets the prefs of FCPX; after launch, it looks 'empty', just use Open Library (Mediathek öffnen)

I trashed the preferences and reopened Final Cut, and it still sees it as QWERTY. What's weird, is that I have three options (German, English French) in the Command Editor, however, in System Preferences, I only have German. In a previous step, I did add English and French in System references to test if that made a difference; however, I have deleted them long since. Final Cut still sees them for some reason.

What I meant when I said "clean install" was that I didn't migrate any apps or preferences over using the Migration Assistant. Instead, I set it up as a new Mac, redownloaded some Apps from the App Store (including Final Cut) – those that weren't available on the Mac App Store I just copied from TM – and manually copied my remaining files from Time Machine.

    moritzhberg:

Did you ever find a solution to this problem? I'm having exactly the reverse problem: My keyboard layout in FCP X has gone to German, but I have a US English system. I also have English and German in the submenu of "Default" in FCP X, and even though English is the one checked, when I look at the layout in the Command Editor window, it's clearly the German version. I can't even pick "German" from the submenu and then switch back. It just stays on "English". I only have a US English keyboard layout selected on my system. I've also reset my FCP X preferences without success.

    @jvolino

    different approach:

dl and install the free tool Language Switcher

I'm using it, to set individual apps to English (for screenshots or for folowing tutorials in English), without switching my whole OS, which is set to German

launch it, select Final Cut, set it to English ... maybe a rude method, but maybe a solution to your prob ....

I have the same problem with Magic Keyboard and FCPX. My Magic Keyboard is a french keyboard (AZERTYUIOP...// QSDFGHJKLM...//<WXCVBN,;...). The system language is FRENCH. The keyboard preferences are FRANÇAIS. The virtual keyboard shown by FCPX is a ENGLISH Keyboard with a numerical keypad !! With all my other keyboards (complete USB keyboard, old Bluetooth complete keyboard (white plastic), wireless keyboard), FCPX works fine. I have reported the problem to APPLE via the menu « Final Cut Pro/Émettre un commentaire sur Final Cut Pro... » two months ago. I notice that the release 10.2.3 of FCPX (working with OSX 10.11.3, or OSX 10.11.4 beta 2) does not solve the problem...

Hello michelmc and everybody. I have exactly the same problem with a brand new iMac 27" 5K, obviously delivered with a Magic Keyboard V2. Everything is in french. But FCPX is obstinate, it only sees an extended american keyboard. Too bad for the Magic of the keyboard. More like a spell. And very highly annoying, I have a lot of editing to do, hence the new big iMac, and it slows me down a lot not to have my shortcuts working. It is very useful to see that with other keyboards the problem disappears... I'll make sure to report the problem too and keep on trying different solutions. Should something work, I'll make sure to post it here too. Cheers. D
