Why isn't Quicktime backwards compatible?

I have quite a few old MS Windows programs that use various versions of quicktime. Since I have upgraded ,reinstalled new OS's my older programs will not work using newer versions of Quicktime and trying to install older versions only gives many errors. Why isn't Quicktime backwards compatible? I love my older programs and I am very disappointed that I now cannot use them because of something as simple as the viewer. Please help if there is a fix for this! Thanks.
