On my mid 2010 MacBook Pro there were audio in and out jacks but I could record the analog audio no problem.
That was discontinued in 2012 MBPs. You will need a USB input connection plus the appropriate software.

Are you able to detail the manufacturer/model of the lead you bought?
Can you post a pic of what you've set up for audio input in System Preferences?
