iTunes gift cards and in App purchases

If i redeem an Apple iTunes gift card, i.e. $100 as a credit on my iTunes account. How do I apply that amount when making an in app game purchase first instead of my credit card?

iPhone 4S, iOS 7

IF you have a balance in your iTunes account, the balance will always be used for purchases until it runs out and that includes making in app purchases. Your credit card should not be charged.

i redeemed my Itunes card on our Mac but used my iPad to make the in app purchase. My CC was used for the purchase and not the iTunes card balance

On your iPad, go to Settings > iTunes & App Stores and click your Apple ID, then "View Apple ID". Enter the password when requested. Do you see "Apple ID Balance" at the top with your credit amount?
