I bought a new Airport Extreme 802.11ac to replace my old Airport Extreme base station.  I followed the setup instructions in the booklet but the light blinks amber and airport utility only provides a message 'unexpected error found' try again

The "unexpected error" message usually appears as a result of a network bug in Mavericks, Yosemite and El Capitan. It can also appear when you have a defective AirPort router.

One possible simple solution might be to use an iPhone or iPad for the setup. Do you have one of those devices handy?

Another possible solution is to check and adjust iPv6 settings for both WiFi and Ethernet on your Mac, to verify that you have things set for Link Local Only.

Resetting the AirPort is a good move, as Carolyn mentions, as well as restarting your Mac.

If you are still having difficulty, post back and we'll work things through step by step.
