Q: Magic Mouse swipe problem with El Capitan Mail

I have an iMac with an Apple Magic Mouse. I installed OS X El Capitan about one week ago, and updated to 10.11.1 today. Contrary to what Apple has written, I only need to use one finger on the mouse to swipe left or right on items in my inbox. In fact, when I've selected an item in my inbox a two-finger gesture does nothing. Has anyone else observed this? Is there a way to make the mouse behave correctly? Is there a way to turn off the swipe feature?

I have noticed this behavior and find that it sometimes makes it difficult to select an email for reading.  I think if there is any sliding of the finger during the click then it becomes a click-swipe motion and the click is immediately dismissed by the swipe action.  The result is instead of selecting the message for reading I get either the "Mark as" or "Trash" options.

If I use the trackpad then I do not see the problem because the swipe action requires two fingers.  With the magic mouse the two-finger swipe is used to switch between virtual desktops, so I'm not sure what the fix would entail.

With an IMac and ElCapitan, in Mail, the left right swipe just locks it up and I have to shut it down and open it again. I need to turn this feature off. It is a major waste of time. Any ideas?

Seeing the same thing on an iMac with the original Magic Mouse.

Any way to at least disable this feature? It's throwing off our use of Mail.

The only workaround that I could find was to use the classic layout (Mail-->Preferences-->Viewing-->Use classic layout), but then you get the old user interface and that may not suit your needs.

mcoomey is correct. I've been searching for months and the only way to stop this is by using the classic view, which isn't what most of us want. There is a lot about this topic in other threads here along with sound advice to ask Apple to allow users to turn off swipe gestures so a Magic Mouse can be effectively used. Go to Apple.com/feedback.

NOTE: anything you read about Terminal commands to turn off horizontal scrolling will not work under El Capitan...I've tried them.

As a workaround to the left or right swipe in mail getting stuck, rather than quitting mail, you can mouse click on another application and then mouse click on the mail icon in the dock. After this, when you click on mail again, it should not be stuck any more.

Also, to correct the left-right mail swipe from getting stuck again, I went to mail preferences and changed to classic view in the view menu. I then unchecked the classic view to change back the view to the way it was. After doing this, the swipe left-right feature in mail worked again.

If you zap the PRAM you may find the mouse behaving better.  I was experiencing the same problems, got so bad with the gestures misbehaving that it practically locked up mail.  All better now.

What is the PRAM and how does one zap it?
