why wont my macbook restart after software updates

I installed a new operating system on my Macbook Pro, but after updating other applications my computer wont restart.

MacBook Pro, Mac OS X (10.6.8)

What operating system did yo install?

Note that Recoverymode is Lion or later.

Then format the startup disk and do a fresh install of OSX
