Q: how can i import photos from iPhoto to Photos without losing the face tagging and keyword data?

I set up photos when it was originally installed but opted to not migrate all my pictures from iPhoto at that time.  I have now decided that I want to use the Photos app instead of iPhoto so wish to merge all the photos from iPhoto with the other photos i now have in Photos.  How can i move all the photos from iPhoto to Photos without losing all my keyword and face tagging information?  It took me months to do all the tagging and keywords for around 6000 photos so i am not keen to move them if i lose this data?  I don't want to have two separate libraries either; i tried this and found it a pain.  I tried exporting into files and then importing into photos but it lost all the face tagging, keywords and location information.

That is not yet possible in Photos.  You can drag your iPhoto Library onto the Photos icon in the dock and migrate it to Photos, then switch between libraries in Photos.

And if you are using iCloud Photo Library and have enough iCloud Storage, you can merge the libraries in iCloud.  Enable both libraries in turn as your iCloud Photo library and wait for the photos to upload. You will have a merged Photos library in iCloud, that will download to your current  iCloud Library on your Mac.  That will save your albums, titles, keywords, searchable faces tags, but the faces albums will not sync to iCloud, so even this work-around will not save your faces labels.   This describes, was will sync back from iCloud:  Use Photos and iCloud Photo Library on multiple Mac computers - Apple Support

If you keep your libraries separate, you could use PowerPhotos for easy browsing.  Is it very versatile to help browsing multiple libraries, without having to open them in Photos.   Fat Cat Software – PowerPhotos
