I want to pu my old NAS hard drive in my old Mac G5, but the mac won't boot with the drive connected to the mac. The os x is installed on another drive and works perfectly without the nas drive connected.
The NAS hard drive is 1 TB hard drive.
Mac G5 running os x 10.5.8:
Processor: 1.8 Ghz
Ram: 1.25 GB
PowerMac, Mac OS X (10.5.8)
What brand & model is the actual drive from the NAS?
It's an LG NAS N2A2
OK, it's not clear, are you pulling the drive out of the case to install the actual drive itself inside the G5, attaching it via USB, or what?
Does the Mac power on & just not boot or what?
Yes i tried to connect it inside the G5 with SATA- cable.
When I press the power button it shows the apple logo for a few seconds then it turns to a blue screen. I've tried to start the mac holding the "option" key to select the right hard drive to boot from. I can not even see the other drive there.
I know that the 1 tb drive is working, but once I connect it to the mac it won't even boot. Do you think it have to do with the firmware thats running on the nas drive?
So, only the NAS drives shows up when you hold option key at bootup?
Have you done a PRAM reset, CMD+Option+p+r...

No sorry, i can only see Macintosh HD, which is another drive where i have os x installed.
Should i still do the PRAM reset even if i can't see the drive?
Does it show up in Disk Utility?
I don't think the PRAM reset will help this, likely the drive is another format, like NTFS.
No I can't see the disk in disk utility but that is because I can't boot the Mac. Is it possible to launch disk utility without booting the Mac?
Oh, it doesn't even boot when connected, I wasn't clear on that for some reason... no, no way to run DU if it won't boot. 😟
We might need to attach it with one of these to figure this out...
I tried to boot the mac with the hard drive inside again (not with the cable you suggested) and i managed to boot the mac successfully but I can't see the drive in disk utility... Is there a better program to format the drive than DU?
Not on Mac, maybe Windows or Linux.
If you can boot it again with it installed, open Terminal & type or paste this in & hit return, report what it says...
