Q: USB ports don’t work, display can’t wake up

I bought this new display less than 2 weeks ago and the USB ports don’t work. All 3 of them. Nothing.

Also, when waking up the display goes on and off 2 or 3 times. I have to tap the keyboard periodically to get it to stay on. When I finally get it to stay on, my windows may be all set to the laptop size, which is pretty irritating, and I have to re-adjust their size to fit the display.

I am running Mavericks on a 1 year old MBP. Is this normal behavior for a NEW Apple product? Is there any way to make it act better?
