Q: Early 2011 15" Macbook Pro Crashing Unexpectedly When Unplugged

Hi --

This has been an ongoing issue for the past year or so.

It began crashing exclusively while watching videos. I went to the Genius bar about 4 months ago and confirmed it was not due to a faulty GPU like many other Macbooks of this generation. During the tests run at the Genius bar however, they found OS software corruption, and repaired it accordingly. Much to my delight the issue appeared to go away.

About two months ago I replaced the factory 4GB of RAM with 8GB of high quality Corsair marketed for my given Macbook. About a month ago the shut down issue began again. It began as it was before, starting occasionally when streaming videos, with increasing irregularity -- until now (which unlike before) it shuts down when I do anything of somewhat processing intensity. Anything more than handling emails and a crash is expected.

Unfortunately the crash logs don't seem to hint at what might actually be causing the shutdown. Makes me think it could be a severe hardware defect, however the previous software fix seemed to offer a brief cure before. I expect my HD is coming to the end of the life, as is my battery. More likely than not it is the battery, which is in the "Replace Soon" label and has served a whopping 1381 cycles.

I was planning on replacing the HD with an SD in the near future anyway, however some verification on what might be the source of the issue would be much appreciated, so that I don't sink money into a battery replacement only to know there is a bigger issue at hand.

Here's the system.log file (I believe the crash occurs at 16:18):

Check this link.  If you MBP had a kernel panic, log and post it.

    https://support.apple.com/en-us/HT201753

Run an Apple Hardware Test.  If your MBP came with Snow Leopard OSX, use the disk with the AHT instructions on it.

Note that an error free AHT is not definitive.

    Ciao.

    Hi ogelthrope --

I realize this was quite some time ago (I got access to a new laptop, and put it out of mind). Back to my old crashing ways however .

It doesn't appear that a log file is generated in either of the Diagnostic Report locations (I am running 10.8. Neither home directory nor root.

Unfortunately I am off at college, and all of the accessories that came with my Macbook are back there somewhere -- likely sucked into a black hole never to return. When I did get this checked up on at the Genius bar however, they did run some hardware tests -- perhaps not as extensive as it could have been? I am looking at some third party batteries, as I'm convincing myself that that is the cause of the issue -- although the battery itself doesn't seem to register that it is malfunctioning.

    Thanks!

Edit -- I might also add that on startup it appears to take two attempts to boot correctly. I doubt this will be a determining factor, however seems to be pretty consistent.

If Apple did any testing on that MBP, it would be a better test than the AHT.  I do not know if the battery is the problem or not, but i you do choose to install a third party battery, I can only recommend two options.  One is from OWC and the other is Anker.  Any other brand is playing Russian roulette, especially from ebay.  I would avoid those.

    Ciao.

I'm having this same issue. My battery is in good condition with 67% battery life left. However, as soon as I unplug it, it shuts off and won't restart unless it's plugged in. None of my logs show a crash, and I haven't lost any work. It's really getting frustrating.

Just recently, It started shutting off while plugged in. I'm thinking it might have been last weeks update.

Apples definition of a 'consumed' battery is when the health falls below 80%.

Well, according to the health stats, my cycle count is 273 and condition is normal. Lately, I've noticed that if I run unplugged, it will shut off around 91% battery charge. It's pretty consistent. Is there another way to test the battery to see if this is really the problem?

Your best option is an appointment at an Apple store genius bar and have them test the battery.  The evaluation will be FREE.

    Ciao.

That would be great advice if I lived in a metro area. But I choose to live in Montana where the closest Apple Store is in Salt Lake City, over 6 hours away. I used this forum to try to find an answer to a problem.

Instead, I contacted a local guru after he returned from the holidays. He instructed me to remove the bottom cover and disconnect the battery, then do a power reset. (hold the left side control option shift keys and press the power button) That worked. Saved me one $600 in travels fees.
