Q: FC7 Installation Failed

Hi Gang

During install came up on 2nd disc, (Audio Content 1), when you get the prompt to put the first disc back in, (FC Studio Install DVD). In any event, after about 2 hours, the install failed. Is there a way to clear some type of cache so I can start over again? I have a Desktop Mac Pro 2006.

Thank you

Mike

    1. Use DiskUtility to make images to a HDD of all the FCS install disks.  Once the copy is completed, eject any FCS DVD still loaded, lock all the images you created, then mount all images, and the run the FCS installer.

Because there is now no need for the original physical disks, you can run the installer unattended, and it will run MUCH faster off the HDD than from the DVDs, in addition to the advantages of not having to swap disks.

    2. Launch the installer, using the custom install, and verify what stage the install failed.  Many of the components probably did install correctly.  Deselect all audio components that still need to be installed, and install all components other than the audio libraries first.

    3. Once everything else is installed, then install the individual audio components, one at a time.

I also had considerable problems installing FCS and this is how I got around the problems.

    Good Luck

Hello Gary and thank you for this advice. I've always known it was possible. I'm familiar with using Disk Utilty to make images in fact I do it all the time. However I've never copied 'Mulitple Disks' at a time. I found this Ken Stone explanation using Disk Utility, but he doesn't cover making an image from multiple disks: http://www.kenstone.net/fcp_homepage/making_dvd_copies.html

And BTW, (with regard to 10.6.8), he mentions an output file type as being a 'DVD/CD Master'. I suppose I can muddle thru this process, but in the meantime do you know where I can find a tutorial for making one single image from multiple disks?

    Thanks again Gary

    Mike

Do what you do for a single disk for each FCS DVD.  You need to make a single disk image for each of the FCS's 7 disks.  Once each disk image is created, lock all the images, and then mount all 7 images (double click on each file until the disk is displayed on the desktop..

    1. Launch DiskUtility
    2. Insert the first FCS DVD
    3. In the Left DiskUtility pane, the DVD should show up under SuperDrive.  Select the DVD and then click on New Image.
      DU FCS 1.jpg
    4. Save the new dmg file to a convenient folder on your HDD (i.e. FCS 3 Install Disks).  DO NOT Change the name of the dmg files from that of the default.  This has no effect on what the mounted image's name will be, but it may be confusing when you look at the image on the HDD.  No other settings are required.
      DU FCS 2.jpg
    5. Once the copy is completed, eject the DVD
    6. Insert the next DVD and repeat from step 3.
    7. After you have completed copying each DVD, close DiskUtiltiy
    8. Double click on each of the dmg files and they will each mount onto your desktop as if they were the original DVDs, opening a window for each disk.
    9. Find the FCS Install window and start the install process as detailed earlier.  (you can close the other windows as you won't need them, but do NOT eject the disks.)
    10. Once you have confirmed that all components have been installed successfully, select (highlight) each of the mounted disks, and press "Cmd" and "E" at the same time to unmount the images.

Now you can put your FCS originals someplace safe, and if you ever have to do a reinstall (i.e. an app gets corrupted, etc.) you can easily, and quickly reinstall the problem app(s) from the images on the Installs HDD.

I have an install drive that I keep all my images on so I can quickly (re)install my licensed apps at anytime without having to worry about damaging the originals.  Using this method, you can cut the time needed to reinstall apps, or rebuild an entire system to a couple of hours, instead of many days.

Hope this clears the process up.

    Good Luck.
