iTunes 12.3.1.23 Won't Backup Old iPod Touch

After installing the latest iTunes along with the latest (only so far) El Capitan update, I synched my old Touch with iTunes. I got a message saying my backup was corrupted and I should delete it and try again. I went into preferences and deleted the backup file shown there the tried resynching. Same error.

I did some google-fu and found advice on these forums (or somewhere at apple.com; don't exactly remember where) that I should delete that backup then do a full restore. I did this. Still get the error.

I should add I only use this touch as an mp3 player; for music and podcasts. Since both are kept on my Mac anyway, I really don't need a backup as I kinda already have one on my Mac's HD, in iTunes. I should also add that the synching works fine; I get the error but the synch continues and is fine. But so far I've always been at the computer so I don't know what would've happen had I walked away and not clicked on the ok button although I get the impression it would've continued anyway.

I either need to know how to fix this to stop getting the error

OR

since I really don't need a backup anyway is there a way I can turn off the backup part?

I have this same issue as well. Mac OS X 10.10.5 and iTunes 12.3.2 with first generation iPod Touch.

Booting the Mac from an old backup with iTunes 11 shows no problem.

I've tried every troubleshooting tip on the support pages and nothing works. The sync fails at the first moment of “backing up” even on a freshly restored iPod Touch.
