Force restart your device.

Press and hold both the Sleep/Wake and Home buttons for at least ten seconds, until you see the Apple logo.

Then try email.

the following was posted by a Level 7 user in this thread: Re: After ios9 update my emails with attachments won't open and say "message not yet downloaded from server". They were there previously. How do I get them back?

  • There is a bug in the iOS 9, 9.0.1, 9.0.2 and 9.1 mail app that does not save messages on the device except in temporary storage.
  • This bug affects ALL email account types, not just POP, but it's more serious with POP because that's the only protocol that does sync to saved messages on the server.
  • Apple has responded to reports of this bug and said they will fix it.

FYI...I talked to two tech support people at Apple today via the regular help line. Neither was able to find reference to this problem in his "system". I agree w/ earlier posters that we need to continue to go to apple.com/feedback and log complaints about this problem. (Meanwhile, I'm just leaving all my email on my server, so that my device can retrieve message content.) ... I'm looking forward to a fix, and I'm just hoping that they understand the way POP is supposed to work.

I am with virgin email....

check virgin web email is set to imap enabled in settings

delete email account on ipad

set ipad to airplane mode

add email

this gives you option screen for imap or pop3

choose imap

add email details as per virgin website email help settings

mine was imap4 @virgin.net and other detail for incoming and outgoing emails

take off airplane mode so the ipad can look up the settings

it worked after weeks of stress

i got this from a posting from previous years

applecare tried to help but said it was virgin who needed to help

in the end it was the forum and trial and error

good luck

TO me one of the worst tech screw ups ever. I had two years of emails on my iPad I refer to often, now they are gone. Even new emails 'go away' after a day or two. Yes I can change my pop3 to not delete going forward, but all the old stuff gone. I bought the higher gig pad so I could save all my emails, not for bs apps and such. I want my money back. I paid extra to be able to keep my email, the update deleted them. I have no value in the extra gigs now. I also have lost my ability to travel with the iPad as I cannot access old emails for information. It's a,most criminal actually, Apple fundamentally went into my iPad and deleted content that was personal to me. Maybe I can get my money back so I can use it toward my new surface pro 4 - which actually has a freaking USB so I can put my grandkids pictures in Flickr while I travel. It takes a lot to get me frustrated, this accomplished it
