Pages Templates

Where are the Pages templates files stored? I've looked in all the usual places and I see in the System Library where Keynote templates are stored but why doesn't Apple follow form and standards and place the Pages templates in or near the same location?

Does anyone know where I can find them? Where I can add a new template by dragging and dropping from a flash drive?

12' Powerbok G4, Mac OS X (10.4.8), iWork, iLife, Apple Pro apps, etc.

Templates for both Pages and Keynote are located in two different spots, depending if they are the default templates the application came with, or templates added later by the user.

For the latter, I'm not sure if the location changed for iWork '06, but the latest versions of Keynote and Pages both store added templates in the users Library -> Application Support -> iWork. In that directory, the folder path Pages -> Templates -> My Templates is the default location for user-generated templates (at least, that's the default when you save a document as a new template).

As with Keynote, the default templates that come with Pages are stored in the application package. To access them you need to select the application while holding down the Control key to open the contextual menu, and choose "Show Application Package", which will open a new Finder window with the package contents. For Pages, the templates are in Contents -> Resources -> [language].lproj.

I doubt that putting the resources for an application in a package is "hiding" them & not trusting the end user. If that were the case, it wouldn't be so easy to open the package.

I've seen the problems that can occur when all the "pieces" aren't kept where the programmers intended. I've used AppleWorks 6 since it came out in March, 2000. I think that the package with both OS X & OS 8/9 apps & resources didn't happen until OS X support was added with version 6.1. Because packages didn't exist when AppleWorks 6 first came out, there are three essential folders (among others) that reside in the AppleWorks 6 folder with the application package. Users will move one or more of these items & then ask why such & such doesn't work. If they were in the package, this would be much less likely to happen.

I had the same problem as Robb Mitchell.
I'm new to Apple, liked at first sight liked the hard and software very much (especially compared to PC).

I've just bought the licence for the newest iWork, hoping that I'll get access than to the default templates as it is said in the users manual (french version): Library -> Application Support -> iWork.
Unfortunately in the iWork folder there's only the users guide and anything else.
I guess the users' guide is out of date. 😟
I'll try the other way.

Are you trying to find the French templates? If so the spot you have indicated is where the user templates are stored.

And the French templates will differ from the English ones mostly by the name of the template, some of the descrptive text and the paper size None of the other text (the "Lorem Epsom" greeking will be changed to french). Be aware of what it is you need and how much trouble you want to go through to get the French templates.

What is the primary language of your machine, and which paper sizes do you require are your first two questions to answer.

An english template can still be used with French language if you need the US paper sizes, unless you abcolutely need the titles of the temlpates to be in French.

Thanks a lot Gerry for your reply. Using the solution "Show Application Package" given by Tulse I've found what I was looking for.

I wasn't looking in particular for the french version of themes and found that their names in the application package were in English. Fortunately switching languages is quite straigtforward with Max OS X. Changing the OS language changed automatically the application language so that I could find more easily my way to the theme file I wanted.

Now I have another question: There are two template files for each theme, e.g.
14 Pushpin8x6.kth
14 Pushpin10x7.kth
What does 8x6 and 10x7 mean exactly?
I suppose that's I kind of measure.

Those files are within the Keynote application. The sizes on the files indicates the proportions of the theme that are available. If you were to begin a new Keynote document and choose Pushpin, in the bottom left corner you will see a drop-down menu with two choices. One is 800x600 and the other is 1024 by 768. Those are the corresponding sizes for the proportions of 8x6 and (believe it or not) 10x7.

Keynote can see how many files area available and make the proper arrangements when letting you choose the theme. You will see more sizes available with the White and the Gradient themes.

Pages uses a different metaphor and is a bit more complicated. It would be nice to be able to choose EU vs US for the paper size when you first open your document or at least be able to switch betweeen the two sizes and have it use the proper format when you switch (changing paper size in a Pages document can cause awkward reorganizing of margins and layout to get things right. It's yucky)
