Q: how do i stop Imessage from capitalizing all letters of a proper name?

I am using an iPhone 5s with IOS 9.1 installed.  When I am typing a message in imessage the systems always capitalizes all the letters of a proper name. If I type the name Ashley, it auto corrects to ASHLEY.  If I type Gaby, it corrects to GABY.  The system seems to recognize first names and auto capitalizes only proper first names.  How can I get this to stop?

I am obviously being facetious. BUT, it's OKAY that you don't get that.

No one has any idea what caused this since there are only a few of you that report the issue. And chill, you are the one using the caps lock to do all the yelling. Why make statements such as "Thanks, Apple!"? That makes it look as though you are unaware that Apple is not here, so that is why I responded as I did.

It's not caps, it's the problem described here in the thread. Again, I'm being faceitous. But you clearly understand that :-)

Hello, I had the same issues before. You need to go to Settings/General/Keyboard and turn off Autocapitalization. That has worked for me. I am on AT&T so it's not a Verizon issue.

Thanks but that did not correct it on our phones.

I have been having this problem for months now.  I found a couple other places online where people have this problem. Thank you to ChrisJ4203 for your patient questions.

No, I don't use Verizon. I use Straight Talk, and the carrier shows up as "Sprint" in the top right of my phone.  So I suppose that is evidence against it being specific to Verizon.

No, I don't have all caps in my contacts.

    The problem is persistent.

If anyone else can shed light on this problem, please share.

THANK YOU!  er, I mean, Thank you.

I've had my 6s since last fall and have been having this same issue from the get-go.  Every time I type someone's name it auto-caps the whole name, not just the first letter.  The names aren't saved that way in my contacts.  In fact, it happens when I type my 8 year old's name, and he doesn't have a phone, and isn't in my contacts.  I'm on AT&T and live in Washington.  It is a very annoying issue.  I was Googling a solution and came across this thread and thought I'd add my $0.02.

I didn't think it was my contacts but searched for "Tom" and it had 8 "Tom"s and 1 "TOM" (which I changed to "Tom") and it appears to have worked.

This has been happening to me for about six months and is doing my head in.  I've tried everything I can find online and it won't change.  Clearly an apple bug...  I'll keep searching!

In summary, if you have a proper name in all-caps anywhere in any of your contact databases, IOS texting will try and make it all-caps.

I've had this problem as well.  Here was my solution for the IOS texting app changing proper names to all-caps.

I figured it out after IOS consistently turned the name "Russell" to all-caps.  Of course, Russell can typically be both a first name and a last name.

Between my work and personal contacts, the contact database on my phone has over 10,500 names.

On my personal contact list, I had three instances of "Russell".  All were not all-caps.

But on my work contact list (from an Exchange Server), I had 27 instances of Russell.  One, and only one, contact was all-caps "DAN RUSSELL".

After correcting the name on the Exchange Server to normal upper and lower case characters, I checked to ensure that my phone had the updated contact. Then I sent a text that included the name Russell.  IOS no longer tried to make it "RUSSELL".

Thanks for the hints from everyone on this thread.

i think EAJS is onto something. if you have a caps problem. try 1) checking your contacts for names with capital letters - and depending on how you sync you contacts, one person could have multiple address book entries t are linked. you need to check them all 2) Do an iOS search for the name ( to check if your phone has any other references to the name). 3) check that your phone's contact list is not sync'd to a corporate directory. I'm not 100% sure of all the ways to check this, but for me, it's Settings/Mail, Contacs, Calendars. see if any of the accounts there are set to sync your contacts. if yes, then try disabling the contact syncing (just to test whether it fixes the problem) if it does then the problem is in the server side address book. (for my corporate directory, all the entries are server side, so another test could be to turn on airplane mode to disable your phones connectivity and see is they problem persists).  good luck!
