Bootcamp El Capitan fails, cannot partition disk

I want to install Win10 using bootcamp on my late 2013 mbp, 1T SSD,

running latest El Capt update 10.11.1

downloaded the 64 image win10

back up done, all set.

bootcamp assistant copied to new 64 usb 3.0 the support files ( after a super slow/long download of win support files)

all on usb, all i need is to partition the disc for windows 10.

No matter the size I give (using the divider) from 32 to 100 gigs (I got 700gigs free),

same error occurs: Your disk cannot be partitioned. Press ok (and start over)

Not one info about the error, no log to be found...

Are there more having this issue? Is there another way to define a partition for windows and boot on the usb to install win10?

Could this be related with the new security thingy? Do I need reboot in safe mode, type csrutil disable, reboot,

do the partition and reboot enable again? Some search gave showed up that this Rootless System Integrity Protection

eat some extra block of the disc, potentially explaining the failure but other result say that once the csrutil is restored

or El Capt is newly installed the win partionned gets corrupted or lost. So not very tempted about f... up my disk.

So how on earth do you install win10 on a mac nowdays ?

MacBook Pro (Retina, 15-inch, Late 2013), OS X Mavericks (10.9.2)

I'm also having this issue. I have read you need to go into single user mode and run a disk check (/sbin/fsck -fy). Trying it now - will report back.

1. Do not use a USB3.0 flash drive.

2. You do not need to disable El Capitan SIP.

3. Do you have a Fusion drive?

4. Have you run a Disk Utility Repair?

5. Boot in Safe mode - Try safe mode if your Mac doesn't finish starting up - Apple Support - boot normally, and try again.

6. Run SMC/NVRAM Reset and try again.

lindsayfromphoenix you can try these steps as well.

You will still use a USB, but a USB2.0, not a USB3.

Can you check Applications -> Utilities -> Console logs for any disk/partitioning related messages?

If you do not have any disk errors, the next option is to back up OS X, boot into Internet Recovery (Command+Opt+R - with a spinning globe), erase your internal drive, restore TM backup and retry BCA again.

Hi Loner T, I've seen you helping out on similar discussions to this - thanks for all the assistance you've given.

I don't mean to hijack this thread, but I was able to get BCA to successfully partition my drive and format the WININSTALL disk that I'm using (I'm using a WD My Passport since I don't have a large enough USB stick) by using the command I listed above in Single-User mode.

However, now when I try to boot into the Windows 10 side and install Windows 10 off the drive, it says "Windows cannot be installed to Disk 0 Parition 4" and when I click format it doesn't do anything.

I see you helped supastring in this thread: iMac Retina - BootCamp - Windows 10 - Partition Problem - and was wondering if that's the same process you think I should follow, my qualm being that when I check why it can't install on that disk it says that the partition is in the incorrect format.

You will not be able to us the WD because it is an external USB HDD, not a flash drive. It will confuse BCA and the Windows installer. It can also lead to black screens or other issues. You need a 8-16GB USB2 flash drive.

Your problem most likely stems from the WD. Do you also have a iMac 5K? The referenced iMac supported Windows EFI boot, but it depends on your iMac year/model.

Since you are on a 2014 Mac (it supports EFI boot and is UEFI-compliant). You do not really need a USB, as long as you have some way to boot the W10 (you can directly download W10 from https://www.microsoft.com/en-us/software-download/home with your product key) to a writeable DVD and boot from it using an external Optical drive. Create a Free Space partition of the Windows size you want using Disk Utility. You will lose about 128MB for a MSR partitions, but rest will be NTFS.

Rebooted in safe mode, and rechecked the disc. no prob found. For some reason, I decided run it again. Weird enuff, on second pass, it found in catalog a file count for a dir that was 58 instead of 59. volume and rest was ok.

Did it again and this time, some repair strings were added to the log , in the end it said operation failed, disk is corrupt, can't be repaired, call 911, exit error 8...

So to recap: I went from zero error on few inspections in regular mode to a corrupted disk announcement in safe mode after 3 passes..

Doesn't really feel like you can trust this soft... How can it behave like this?

Anyway, a repair pass is free: let's do it again! This time, operation successful.

I did not ask for a why. It was successful, good enough for me! Time to find out.

Rebooted, went to BCA, like magic, it made a partition this time, and rebooted on the usb.

Then when came the time in win installer to pick the partition to install on: bam. **** storm again. None of the 4 partitions with weird sizes were

looking appealing to the installer. Abort. Tired of this crap I called it night.

Now from reading your message (btw thx for the help so far Loner T) I understand that the usb 3.0 might be the problem??

So next is to transfer the 3.0 usb files onto a 2.0 fat formated one and try reboot on that thing...

To be continued...

k, so after some client work, went buy a new usb 2.0

retried and... same as with 3.0.

stuck at this very same screen of win installer saying Windows can't be installed on drive 0, partition[index]

(Note that installation was also made using my IPad camera+zoom, kuz the installer is displayed at such unsane res, it

is quite impossible to read anything)

K, so I have enough usb's in house for the next decade, I can make/destroy partitions at will.

So now what? What needs to be done to make the win partition compatible?

onMac.failure -

I was running into exactly the same issue - but my issue didn't seem to be related to the type of drive I was using as Loner T suggested.

I went into Disk Utility and found the partition that Boot Camp Assistant created for me and wiped it clean and changed the format to FAT in the dropdown.

From there I was able to go back into the windows boot and clicked the partition and I formatted it on the Windows side and Windows installed seamlessly. I had a couple of restarts that forced me to go back into it "from the beginning" but it was clear that it was making progress each time. Currently running Windows 10 on my MBA 13 El Capitan.

Well looks like we both happy men! (as far as a man can be happy running Windows 🙂 )

On my side, the "format" thingy in installer was the thing I should have pressed earlier... some how missed this info and once there,

I didn't think this kind of work should be done by the installer. It took less than a sec and install went flawless.

At some point my second screen went on, mouse reacted, and on final restart the second screen stayed black. No sound going to speakers.

Classic fresh installs probs... beyond scope of this forum/topic.

For the sake of test, as booting from a USB stick is a breeze and because the apple install page says 3.0 is supported for my late 2013,

so I tried first on the 3.0 stick (also because first attempt went to that very same screen) and indeed, all worked fine.

Read/write speed is really much better than 2.0.

Loner T, Lindsayfromphoenix, thx to u both!
