HP Officejet 6500 won't print, El Capitan, new MAC

Just bought a new MAC yesterday. My HP Officejet 6500 isn't working. the printer is connected to the network, HP support said to remove from the list in the Printers & Scanners System Preferences, and add back in. But it's unable to locate the printer, so when I added it by using the IP address. It shows it's connected but it won't print. The message I get is "printer is not responding".

Suggestions anyone?

I've checked for driver downloads, and HP said included in the App updates.

I don't have the Wi-Fi Direct icon so I'm assuming my printer is Wireless Direct.

All the HP troubleshooting is not helping at all and it keeps circling round when I check on all the links.

No phone # at HP need to figure out how to call them.

One troubleshooting page at HP said to plug the printer in the ethernet and do a bunch of stuff, I guess I'll have to drag this 27" into where the printer is and do that. But what is perplexing is that it worked on Yosemite, but stopped working when i upgraded to El Capitan.

Printing software distributed by Apple is provided by the vendors. It's common for the software support to lag behind OS upgrades, especially where older models are concerned. Your printer is about six years old and HP probably has little or no interest in supporting it. That type of printer should be regarded almost as a consumable, like the ink cartridges. You use it until it stops working, then get a new one.
