When you start downloading something from the web, the download arrow icon will reappear.
This is not a problem.
thank you for the help. but actually not. since I found this issue 2 hours ago, I have tried many times to download a page direct by Safari. it's not working!
For anyone getting here because of the original interface problem of the missing icon for the download list in Safari:
First: Yes, you do get it back, as soon as you click your first download link.
But, in order to prevent the download button from disappearing again, you have to do the following:
Go to the menu bar to select "Safari" / "Preferences" then in the tab "General" find "Remove download list items" and set the pull down menu to "Manually".
Now, the "Downloads" button will stay in place and work as usual, giving additional functions by right-clicking the items contained in the list.
However, if you press the "Clear" button inside that list or if you remove its last item using the individual right-click "Remove from list", then the button will disappear again.
As an added nuisance, the button (when present) cannot be moved to any other position in the toolbar. (At least, this keeps other icons from hopping to other positions, when the button disappears).
