Q: Video camera no longer recognized after upgrading to El Capitan

FCPX 10.2.2 or iMovie10.1 no longer recognizes my video camera (Sony HVR-V1U).  I suspect the problem is El Capitan (running 10.11).  Video camera is recognized on an old MacBook Pro that's not been upgraded.  Is there a fix?  I can't find anyone with this problem.  I know I'm not the last guy trying to import HDV tape   Thanks in advance.

What connections does your newer Mac include? Thunderbolt or Firewire?

Apart from FCP, does the Mac see the camera as a Firewire device?

    Hi, Russ --

I tested the camera with new FireWire 800 and Thimderbolt connections on two Macs (an older Mac Pro and a MacBook Pro) both of which have been updated to El Capitan.  Those computers also don't see the camera as a FireWire device. It's as ita not hooked up. I bought a new Firewire worried that was the source of my problem. It's not.

Also, two older Macs not upgraded with El Capitan do see the Sony Camcorner normally. Unfortunately, neither of these machines are capable of han large FCPX projects.

    Thanks.

You say "it is as not connected". Just to make sure: did you look at System Information, Firewire, or just inside FCP X and iMovie?

If you didn't, open System Information (hold down the option key, Apple Menu->System Information; or choose About This Mac, and click "System Report".

Then click Firewire and show us what you see (post a screenshot).

I have quite a collection of HDV tapes and a deck used for playback, GV-HD700.

This unit has a menu and operating system similar to HDV Sony cams.

Just ran a 15 minute import over firewire/thunderbolt adapter and it captured and performed as expected.

Created a new Project and all went OK.

This issue must be something specific to your system.

Not sure what that would be at this point

I dug out an old Sony mini DV camera (with a dodgy FWiLink port) that my 10.11 system (and FCP X) recognized. (I also had some difficulties at first – re-inseerting  the cable several times before it worked. This was not the first time I've connection issues, but I would say they were worse than with previous OS  X versions. Could be coincidence,)

Certainly you're correct that many people continue to work with HDV (and DV) tape. So one would think these boards would be flooded with complaints about FW cameras not working with )S X 10.11.

I'm wondering whether the latest OS versions are somehow less forgiving of the physical interfaces. Because you have already done most of the swapping out of devices and cables that we would ordinarily suggest, Do you have access to another FW camera to test with your newer machine?

Thanks, Russ.  I just noticed my iSight camera isn't working in FaceTime or recognized in FCXP.  I did reset the SMC but no fix.  Very weird. I'll keep looking.  Thanks again.

    Hi, Tom -

Computer used for editing FCPX is a 2008 Mac Pro (OSX 10.11.1)  iSight camera used for FaceTime.  I've replaced both cables to trouble shoot.  I've also reset SMU.  No luck yet.

    Any resolution to the problem?

I just ran in to the same problem.  I upgraded to El Capitan and now Final Cut no longer can see my JVCBR-DV600UA DV video deck.  I've tried it with the firewire then also with a firewire to Thunderbolt adapter, neither work.  It's not just Final Cut, nothing recognizes it.

I have had this problem for some time now, was working before El Capitan,

now it isn't camera is a Canon XL2.

My two firewire drives continue to work as normal, just the camera is not recognised.

As previous post nothing recognise the camera FCP - Imovie and finder.

Anyone know if a fix/workaround has been found ?

Try shutting down your Mac, connect  all equipment and power up, restart Mac.

    Also try resetting SMC :

Reset the System Management Controller (SMC) on your Mac - Apple Support

    Hi Al,

Yes I did try that.  I even disconnected everything else firewire

and just had the camera direct to the IMAC, still no joy.

Now I have decided to stop wasting my time and make a boot partition with snow leopard or

Yosemite on it, I know it did work then. At least I can move the media from my

tapes into FCP and then reboot to work on it.

    Thanks for the reply,

    Denis

Hi. I believe the answer (although not a solution) is this. HDV is a trademark of The HDV Consortium, which comprises JVC, Canon, Sony. This trademark, so I have read, specifically relates to camcorders which record to digital tape. For the past 6-7 years (ever since Windows 7 in fact) no one has had any success when connecting a HDV compliant camcorder to a computer via IEEE1394 (Firewire/iLink)

I personally have a Canon HV40 HDV camcorder and have upgraded my OS from Vista to Windows 10. From the information I have obtained, Any camcorder that identifies itself as an HDV unit is ignored by the operating system. In the case of Windows 10, totally misidentified as a sound/games controller.

The only way around this currently, is to force the camcorder to playback in DV LOCK mode (for Canon) or equivalent mode on other cameras, bypassing its ability to capture/transmit in HDV mode. Once SD playback mode has been selected, the OS isn't notified that the camera is an HDV unit, and it should be recognised simply as a camcorder by the firewire port and any capture software you're using.

It's taken me quite a few days to gain this information and I have had no luck whatsoever in finding a replacement inf file for my computer, or any luck editing the correct code into my existing inf files. It is annoying that you can still purchase these cameras new, and they are advertised as HD units. Yet various OS's cannot capture in HD simply because of a trademark violation regarding the use of "HDV".
