Q: Is El Capitan free?

I read that upgrading to El Capitan is free and available for those using 10.6.8 and above. However, when I try to download the software, the Apple store wants my credit card info first. That doesn't sound free to me. What am I not getting?

Apple requires a credit card listed to the account in order to download anything whether it's free or not.
El Capitan is free and you won't be charged. When there is a charge for a download, you will know it when you do download the item.
