Q: Hard drive for video editing?

Hi. I've bought a panasonic Lumix GH4 camera and recorded some 4K footage (4096x2160) It plays well in final cut pro 7 (and in quick time) when I play it from the internal hard drive, but when I try to play the video from my scandisk 2gb external harddrive and from my Western digital my book 2gb external hard drive (both have usb3), both the image and the sound make stops during playback (both in quick time and fcp) So I guess this means my external hard drives aren't good enough for 4K. Oh, and yes, I've converted the H264 to prores already.

Does anyone have any good suggestions on which hard drive to buy? Ideally it should have around 4-5 TB and don't cost over 200 dollar.

Also, I've heard that Toshiba and Lacie are not recommended brands when it comes to external hard drives - Do you agree on this?

Best, Petter

PS. I run OS X Yosemite 10.10.5 on a macbook pro retina, 2,3 GHz intel core i7, 16 GB memory

Final Cut Pro 7, OS X Yosemite (10.10.4)

Sorry, but for editing 4K ProRes...you won't be in that price range.  The other drives you have are too slow.  Both drives listed, although USB3, are consumer backup drives, not meant for the rigors of video editing. I'm sorry to say that for editing video, especially 4K video (ProRes), you are going to need to spend a bit more.  What you'll need is a two drive or more RAID, with a USB3 or Thunderbolt connection.  Raid means two drives striped together as one to make the video play out faster.

    Something along these lines:
