Microphone not working with some apps after updating to iOS 9.1

Hi there,

After updating my iPhone 6 from iOS 8.4 to 9.1 (I learned to avoid first major updates the hard way) I noticed Siri wasn't listening anymore. First I thought something was misconfigurated from the update, but then I decided to do some tests with the headphones and it worked fine. I talked with some guys on the Apple chat support and they couldn't find anything wrong on the diagnostics. I already tried turning Siri off and on again, changing settings on voiceover and accessibility and did a factory reset without success. The weirdest thing is that voice memos, snapchat, video (from the camera app) and everything else is working fine, except the videos recorded within the Facebook Messenger app (and Siri).

Any thoughts?

I sprayed the compressed air at both the top and bottom mice on my iPHONE 6+. It fixed the issue for me. I'm not sure how it got clogged in the first place (there was no visible dirt or debris that I could see) and I rarely keep my phone in my pocket. Anyway, I was surprised that spraying the air on it fixed the issue.

Not sure if the mice are in the same place on the iPhone 7/7+ though.

We are having the same issue with the 9.1 upgrade. Siri dictation not working and Siri commands not working while recording audio does work. I believe this to be a hardware/software issue as it doesn't seem to be effecting everyone with 9.1. I have not had any problems, but a co-worker has the issue. We are both on iPhone 6 and on iOS 9.1.

When we plug in a headset it works perfectly.

Their device is a 64Gb while mine is the standard 16 Gb

Mine is on Verizon while theirs is Sprint

With Sprint they have the option to use WiFi for phone calls Make a call with Wi-Fi Calling - Apple Support so I am wondering if it is associated to any of these differences.

Thank you for trying to resolve/solve this issue.

I am having the same issue since upgrading my Wifi only 64GB iPad2 to IOS9.1. I've gone through my privacy settings, uninstalled and reinstalled Skype (which was the app that lead to the discovery), I cannot get FaceTime or camera or any app to recognize the built-in microphone. Thanks Apple, the only reason that I upgraded it was because then I upgraded my iMac to El Capitan I received a notice about Notes requiring both devices be updated. Notes and the auto handoff feature was working fine; thanks for the great advice. Now how about a fix.

I am also having this issue. I have the iPhone 6+ and iOS 9.1, 64GB, and on Verizon.

The first anomaly that I noticed was the other night at a concert. I recorded several video clips and when I got home and charged my phone (because the battery was in low mode), I watched the videos and no audio only loud static was recorded over the picture. I immediately thought that my microphone had died, but then I tried recording again in my room and video and audio worked find. I have recorded footage from a concert in May and everything was fine.

I tried to find answers on here and someone else had that issue with the recording of video, but no solution was found and it was from several months ago.

Today, my friend sent me a voice text and when I tried to reply, I was able to record a response but the audio was muffled. I went to "Voice Memos" app to test that and I was able to record and play back my voice recording.

Digging around on the forums, I then discovered that some are having issue with Siri, and so I tried that and Siri can't hear me and doesn't respond.

I chatted with Support and they had me do a restore from my computer, which took several hours but that didn't fix the issue.

This time around I wanted to test the front facing camera with audio and the same static thing happened. I powered off my phone and restarted it, and that fixed it for that video, but if I recorded a second one, I'd get loud static on the audio again.

If anyone knows a fix for this please advise!

I have an iPhone 4S and since updating to IOS 9.1 my microphone is not working with some apps. I tried to use the microphone in Google Translate and it states "Microphone disabled - Open Settings> Privacy> Microphone> Translate and turn on the microphone". When I went to Settings> Privacy> Microphone, and the message there states "Applications that have requested access to the microphone will appear here", No applications are listed. Another app called Translator is not picking up on the microphone either. And then tonight I tried to take video and pictures of my son with the camera and I could view them within the Camera app, but when I went to my Photos app, the video and photos were not there. I went back to the Camera app and they no longer appeared there either. I did not enable iCloud under the new update, except for the Find my Phone feature. I am wondering if that is causing some of the problem. Siri is working fine on my iPhone though. I deleted Google Translate and then redownloaded it, hoping that would fix the issue, but it did not. Any help would be appreciated.

I think I just discovered the problem. I think our front microphone has gone out. The voice memos and other apps use a different microphone on the phone and Siri uses the bottom microphone located near the headset jack. I read this on some forum for the iPhone 5 and so I decided to plug in my headphones with the microphone that came with the phone and Siri hears me fine on that one.

I don't know what happened since I didn't have this issue before. The update did something. For everyone else having Siri issues please try this and see if it works and post back.

Actually the voice memos app does use the bottom microphone and I just tested it out by covering the two top mics on the front and back of the phone and only whispering into the bottom mic, so it does work.

The above link shows how to test the microphones. I just don't get it. This is a software issue because I can't voice text either unless I use the headphones w/mic.

The same happened to me after the last update 9.1 siri now disable to hear me and the recorded video by the front camera is without any sound just distortion and while any calling when i use speaker the persone in the other side hear distortion in the first of the call (siri, front camera, and speaker all uses the front microphone which is beside the front camera ) ...i think its a software problem because i noticed when i record video with the back camera and then swich to the front camera the sound be fixed ..but it back to the same problem when i record another video ) so i think the front microphone is affected by the update ..i restored the iphone using itunes as the apple support's advisor adviced me but that didnt help and i still having the same problem seem that its not only me who have the problem i hope apple fix that in the next update

I contacted Apple support again and this time I was bumped up to the supervisor and he's got the engineering team on it to see if they can figure out what is going on and will email me when they figure it out..

The other interesting thing is that Google's voice app hears me. Try that and see if it works.

I also think that this is a software issue and the reason more people haven't caught it yet is because you won't find out if you don't use Siri or try and film video (but then the video doesn't always distort the sound), so I don't think most users know.

I'll post here when I get any news from Apple.

Has anyone else fixed the problem?

I Tried google translate app and it can hear me but i think google translate app uses the bottom microphone so that is normal it works fine but there are apps uses the front microphone like facetime working fine too ..that is wierd..the app that uses the same microphone (siri) doesnt work fine )..if it was a hardware problem facetime couldnt work fine !! Im almost sure it is a software problem ... If there r any news i will post it here too ..

After discovering both Siri and text dictation weren’t working after the latest software upgrade (voice memo was OK) I contacted Apple support. The tech tried several things like turning dictation off/on and shutting down the phone. Finally, we backed up to iCloud and reset the phone. Siri began working but dictation was still dead. The support person booked an appointment at the Apple store, where they found at least one, maybe two, microphones were dead. Received a new phone and all is well. My guess is the latest software update somehow caused or at least contributed to the hardware failures.

Atanoman, did you have the 6s? I have the 6+ so I would probably end up with a refurbished phone, so I don't want that.

Everyone else I still haven't heard back from tech support. I also discovered that Google's app works just fine with voice recognition (or whatever it's called) so you can use that instead of Siri.
