Q: Trying to re-install Yosemite

While trying to re-install Yosemite, the message from the App Store is:  "This item is temporarily unavailable."  Therefore, the MacBook Pro, (early 2011) I am attempting to prepare to give away is stuck in recovery mode.  Any ideas?

What about if you boot into Internet Recovery.

    option command R on restart.

This should present you with the OS X that shipped on the Mac pre-Yosemite.

    edit:

Yosemite is no longer avaialble,  if you "purchased" it before it will be in your Purchases at the App Store and maybe able to download and create an Installer SD card

OS X versions and builds included with Mac computers - Apple Support

Your early 2011  either shipped with 10.6 or 10.7  In either case you need the install DVD that shipped with the machine originally or come up with some other means.

Your first suggestion of booting into internet recovery is working and Mountain Lion is installing. Then I will upgrade my way forward.  Yosemite was installed and working before I stated this process of cleaning off the drive in order to give the MacBook to a friend.  I did go into the app store several times yesterday and today and could not find Yosemite but it kept being listed as the option when booting into recovery mode.  Thanks for the suggestion as I really did not want to have to make my own bootable usb.  Even so, I am going to note the location of the instructions to do just that in case.  Thank you for your prompt response!

I redacted too soon, sometimes our first instinct is the best.

I am glad that worked for you. Good computing !
