Q: Cannot import photos / I only see a blank page

I moved all my photos from Aperture to Photos.app and everything went fine. The only issue I have now is that the “Import” function doesn’t work at all. Whenever I connect my iPhone or iPad to the Mac and select it from the sidebar in Photos.app I only see a blank page without any photos. There seems to be a scrollbar, but there is just no content.

The devices are properly recognized in iTunes. How can I import my photos?

If you use iPhoto or Image Capture to import them, do they show you the photos on your device and then can import them?  (Image Capture app is in your Applications folder)

Is iCloud Photo Library enabled on your iPhone or iPad?

Which version of iOS do you have on your iPad or iPhone?

    Rafael,

are you using Dropbox as well? And is Dropbox enabled to upload photos? Then see Clem's post here:

Re: iPhone pictures don't load in Photos

do you have Dropbox running? If so try disabling it, reboot and reconnect your device to the mac and retry Photos and Image Capture.  This worked for me (iOS9.1 and OSX10.11.1). If this works for you go back and reenable Dropbox and tweak the setting so it isn't your default importer.

The problem was system-wide (I double checked with Aperture & Image Capture where I had the same issue) and related to the Razer Synapse software and its corresponding kernel drivers. After uninstalling the software and its drivers via the official uninstaller all devices were once again present in the Import sections of all apps. Installing the Razer driver (1.45.3) always leads to the same behavior: missing cameras connected via a USB Lightning cable.

That is good to know, which incompatible software can be causing this.  Do you remember which version of the software you had installed, just in case someone else is having the same problem?

Yes, definitely. Thanks for the helpful input.

I had 1.41.x installed, then updated to 1.43.x and now I’m at 1.45.3. The software seems rather buggy in general. You should consider this when buying a Razer input device that you want to use with your Mac. Here are some of the current issues (that weren’t fixed in the last year):

    • Keyboard layout is hardcoded; that’s not a problem when you just have to swap “y” and “z” in your mind, but it can get cumbersome when you have to enter special chars.
    • The Option and Command keys are also mapped to the wrong hardware key and you have to press e. g. Option-S instead of Command-S to get the desired effect.
    • Cloud sync is a mess as it overrides your settings, especially when you try to sync between Mac & Windows.
    • The kernel driver has its issues, as you’ve seen with my USB Lightning camera example (cameras shouldn’t be related to the Razer driver at all).

That said, the hardware is very comfortable, reliable and customizable. Especially the additional keys that you can map or even use as modifiers are great for work in several pro apps.
