Q: iPhone 4s wifi will not turn on since upgrading to IOS 9.1

Since upgrading my iPhone 4S to IOS 9.1 (the auto update seemed to get turned on last week after I did a backup), not only can I not logon to my home wifi, or my office wifi, but now I can not even turn the wifi on (the wifi on button is greyed out)

I have tried:

- soft and hard restarts

- complete reset and restore from backup

- turned on the wifi service

- turned the wifi service off

- continually reboot phone

- ensured that the wifi is not hidden

absolutely no difference

and I know that the wireless is working.  My laptop (that I am currently using), 3 other cell phones, a tablet, and a second laptop are all connected to the wifi with no problems

About 1 out of 20 reboots will result in the WIFI being able to be turned on, but then it will just sit there and not locate any connections.  Eventually, it will time out, and shut the wifi off again

Here is a support article that has some additional steps that you do not have listed:

If Wi-Fi is grayed out or dim on your iPhone, iPad, or iPod touch - Apple Support

    Cheers,

Did you look at the date for this remedy Gail? I have tried this time without number on my iPhone 4S and I STILL have no WiFi. When I DID have WiFi "Not connected" - as opposed to "Off" - my phone wouldn't recognise my router and now it's showing "Off" again. My laptop is also connected fine to my router so tis is definitely an update problem.

Have you tried rebooting your router by unplugging it for 30-60 seconds? Do you have a maximum device limit on your router? Have you tried changing the broadcast channel on the router? Is there any MAC address filtering in place on the router? There are many solutions to try with this issue. It could also be a hardware problem with your 4S as this has been widely reported.

Have you actually tried to read the problem?

what difference will it make if there is a problem with the wifi router, when I CAN'T EVEN TURN THE WIFI ON

You will also notice in the description, that I specified that there are 6 other devices successfully using my home wifi, and, as per the first line, this affects ALL my wifi connections, (work, home, hotsports, etc) because I CAN NOT TURN THE WIFI ON.

Yes, I have tried several times to reset the network connections.  It makes no difference.

As for it being a hardware issue, explain why, up until the IOS on the phone was updated to 9.1, I had NO problems with the wifi on this phone.  As soon as the phone updated, I lost ALL wireless because I CAN NOT TURN THE WIFI on.

Yes, my comments may be a little on the harsh side.  I find the replies to my question as completely irrelevant and do not address the question.  I do accept that people are trying to help.  These answers (other than the one asking about resetting the network settings) have nothing to do with the question. I have bolded the main problem with the wifi not working so that while someone is reading this, there can be no doubt as to what problem is.

I hope those that are willing to try and help with relevant suggestions, will not be offended by what I have posted here.

So, you did Reset Network Settings? The reason I ask is because you didn't mention that in your post which is why I posted the link.

If you did that, then the next recommendation I would provide would be for you to do the following:

    1.     Back up your device to iCloud or iTunes

    2.     Turn off Find My iPhone if it is turned on, then go to Settings>Reset>Erase All Content and Settings

    3.     Set up your phone but do not use the Backup this time around - set it up as a new device

    4.     See if the Wifi issue is fixed

If it is, then try the Erase All Content and Settings again, then when you set it up use the Backup to do the setup. If the Wifi issue returns, then the problem is with some kind of corruption with an App you are running or data that is stored on your device currently. So, at that point, I would recommend that you Erase it one last time and set it up as new, and then manually download or re-sync your music, apps, etc. to your device to avoid the corruption.

If the Wifi issue is NOT fixed by setting the device up as a new device, then you need to make at trip to the Apple Store to have them take a look. You may need to have the device replaced.

    Best of luck,

    Gail,

    Thank you for the reply.

Yes, I have done the reset network settings (several times), and I know that I missed that on my original email.

I have done what you have suggested, and while I would love to say that it works, I hate to report that after resetting the phone to new, I did not log into my Apple network (partially because it couldn't find a connection to the internet, and I wanted to try with as little activated as possible), that I still can not turn the WIFI on.

I know that it points at a hardware failure, and while there is that possibility, I find it suspicious that the WIFI was working prior to the IOS update, and immediately after the update, I have been unable to turn the WIFI on.

    Thanks

    Darcy

    Hi Darcy

Well, I know that previous updates exposed hardware problems in some devices, so it could be a little bit of both. It is something that does get reported by some users after updates, and, of course, it doesn't make people happy to find out that they cannot do anything after an update has been done.

I think at this point, your only option is to take it into Apple so they can take a look at it. Be sure to do your iCloud or iTunes backup right before you take it in. But it's looking like that may be the only way to go based on the fact that a "clean" device  is still not able to connect

    Best of luck,

I am in the same situation with my Iphone 5s.

I have done everything you have with the same results.

The wifi button will simply not turn on.

    This is extremely frustrating.

What is even more suspicious is that I have the identical problem on my iphone 5s.

well,  3 days after my last post (where I had done a complete erase of everything, and still had no WIFI, and then restored everything from a backup), I got a surprise.

I found that my iPhone is now working on the WIFI!  It will pickup any WIFI signal that I get close to.

The bad part?  I didn't do anything except ignore it, and planned on going and buying a new phone.

I wish that I had some suggestions to others as to why, but I do not

This, I do believe, eliminates the possibility of a hardware failure

Well, that was short lived.  WIFI not working again.  Maybe just change to an android phone.   Has to be better than this
