What seems to be the issue that she's having getting the phone set up? If you provide more details I may be able to give you a hand. Is she getting any error messages at all, and if so what are the codes?

    HI

no codes as far as I'm aware. My partner has a contract with another provider. She wishes to use my previous unlocked iPhone 5s but is having problems getting the phone set up.

I'm advised that as she does not have wifi of her own at present she can go to a Costa for example which offers free wifi and upon connecting to this the phone will automatically connect to her provider.

Do you know if that is correct ?

If she has a SIM card in the phone, this is correct, she shouldn't have any problems connecting over wi-fi, but is there any specific message the phone is giving her? There are many reasons she may not be able to activate the phone. Has Activation Lock/Find My iPhone been turned off? Does she have a SIM card in the phone at this time, even if it is an inactive SIM? Have you verified that the phone is unlocked? Has it given her a message saying the activation servers are down at this time?

I did pay Apple to get the phone unlocked then did a restore via iTunes. Sadly she is 150 miles away so can't tell you of any messages.

I Guess I will try to get a message to her and say to try at a WiFi point again tomorrow.

She can't get to the home screen to check settings yet until phone is activated via wifi.

    Bit Chicken and Egg......

I Thank you for the support.

I'd definitely ask her what the phone is saying that she can't activate it, because then it'll give a clearer answer on what the problem is. Sorry I couldn't be of more help today, if you do get in contact with her please let me know and I might be able to give you a hand!

You state that you paid Apple for an unlock...

    First Apple doesn't unlock devices...

Second it doesn't cost money to have a carrier unlock unless you're paying off a contract...

I think you may have paid a company to unlock your device and they are notoriously unreliable.

It depends on the country, I know in Canada and some companies in the United States it does cost to have your phone unlocked. For example, where I am in Canada there's a standard $50 fee for the unlock, along with the other terms that they have going along with that. Also, the original poster may have meant that they put in a request for an unlock with Apple through their carrier, as that is what the carriers do.

    HI

it was actually my network provider who charged me £8.50. They apparently have to contact Apple for certain unlock info.

Going to attempt connection again today.

    Fingers crossed !!

    Hi

Before you gave her the iphone 5s

Did you turn off find my iphone in settings

If you didn't go to find my iphone on

Your Apple iphone click on device list

Top left remove iphone 5s from the list.

Also when my iphone was unlocked

By my network provider in uk i had

To connect to pc to complete unlock on itunes

Only then it worked with another network provider .

Just a thought can they use the same network it would

    Solve the problem .

    Cheers

    Brian ( UK )

    HI Brian

just checked find my iPhone and not on list. Also connected to itunes as per unlock instructions, did backup and then restore iPhone.

Apple are suggest connecting to wifi 'should' download other carriers info autimatically as not everyone has iTunes account. We will see if they are right. Sadly, until she gets it up and running I haven't limited communication available as no landline and she is unwell ☹

Does she happen to have a SIM card in the phone? Even if it is inactive, it doesn't even matter what carrier it is, she would need one in there to activate the phone.
