Q: iWeb Publishing Solution in El Capitan

Not really a question but more an important solution I wanted to provide. After a recent upgrade to El Capitan I noticed that iWeb links were no longer visible after I updated two websites that I manage. The links were there - you could hover over them on the website and see the name of the hyperlink action to be taken - and they even worked but simply weren't visible. A major functionality obstacle.

 

After much investigation I published the websites to a local folder on my drive and then ftp'd onto the the hosted domain sites. File comparisons revealed fewer files published to the hosted domain site than the local folder. I deleted all files and folders on the hosted domain site folder and uploaded all files from my local website to those folders. Worked like a charm!

 

Very important information for those still using iWeb. Yes, it's an extra step but will save your behind should you run into this situation.

Basically what the OP is saying is that they used the iWeb built in ftp to publish the entire site to the host/sever and no links were shown.  When they used an ftp programme such as Cyberduck to connect to the server and then upload the files, the links works, so one would have to suspect an issue both between iWeb and El Capitan - not sure what, but there must be something in El Capitan that is knocking out the correct working of iWeb's in built ftp.

 

The solution seems to be that you need to publish your site to a local folder and then use an ftp programme to upload it.

    It's obviously some conflict between El Capitan and iWeb that affects the direct publishing, but why bother to find out, because there is not likely to be any fix for it with iWeb being an unsupported and unuqdated product?

     

    If publishing to your desktop and using Fetch to upload to your server works, then continue to publish your site this way and you won't have any problems.

    Do not use linked textboxes or shapes.

     

    Use the solution that's been around in this forum for ages.

     

    1. Select the textbox or shape.
    2. Copy the textbox or shape.
    3. Open Preview.app
    4. Do Command-N (New).
    5. Save the image as PDF (Benefit is that text will scale better in iWeb).
    6. Give it a proper name.
    7. In iWeb, delete the textbox or object.
    8. Save and Publish the page to clear the old object.
    9. In iWeb, drop the pdf on the page at the former location of the textbook or shape.
    10. Resize the object if necessary and hyperlink it.
    11. Save and Publish the page.
    12. View page in Browser. Reload page to clear old info.
    13. Practice.

    I had a similar problem after upgrading to El Capitan, but my symptoms seemed worse than what some of you described: Anytime I put a link in any text box, the entire text box would disappear.  At any rate, I found a solution for this and probably for the other problems listed here:

    When you are highlighting the characters that you will use for your link, open "Inspector" and go to the "Graphics" tab.  If "Shadow" is checked, uncheck it.  Then your link will appear.

    Last year I posted a similar solution:

     

    1.  Import the desired background shape from Pages [or another graphic program], setting the background color or texture in Pages, but formatting the Stroke [the line around the shape, for you newbies] and any desired shadow in iWeb.  Assign the hyperlink.

    2.  Superimpose the text box [without background] from iWeb, making sure the text box is in front of the shape.  Assign the hyperlink.

    3.  Breathe a sign of relief that you can continue to work using iWeb for a few years more.

    BTW, for anybody new to this post:  This is clearly an El Capitan issue.  I'm running two iMac's, luckily having kept the other on Yosemite.  This problem does not occur on Yosemite.

     

    [For anyone having difficulty with Vimeo videos not showing the fullscreen option anymore, Wyodor posted a work-around for that, that is pure genius.]

    I have little expertise i this field but my problem , as already stated by several others , was solved when I realised that you cannot have a root entry in iWeb ( El Capitan ) because it always insists that the root folder has a name . The default is  / ( at the Site Publishing Settings ) and it will accept nothing less . Consequently I could not see my upload , and yet it was there all the time but with the extra level of / .

     

    I get around this , as others have , by using an FTP programme to defeat the / level and it works perfectly even though I primarily publish through iWeb .

     

    Sorry if this does not make sense .
