Change Title/Action Safe Zones

Is there a way to change the Title/Action Safe Zones? The default settings are for old CRT TVs, from what I understand. Would be nice to use the new standards for HD.

No there isn't

You could dig around the net and find a third party plug-in.

Send Feedback to Apple for a future update.

BTW: Nice article in the link. 🙂

The first thing to do is what Alchroma said: send Apple feedback on this.

Final Cut Pro->Provide Final Cut Pro Feedback...

Nice article, indeed.

In the meantime, there are relatively easy workarounds. Mind you, they are workarounds, not solutions, but if you need those visual indications to adequately format your content, they may be worth the effort.

1) Create a png image with the drawing of the safe rectangles. This can be a completely transparent background with two partially transparent rectangles. Easy to do in Pixelmator, for example. Just composite this on top of your image, and use V to disable.

2) Create an effect, or a generator, in Motion.

I built this generator for FCPX. It is designed for 16:9 and 4:3 (/center cut safe) display standards (American.) It defaults to the 2007 SMPTE rules for broadcast safe for Fixed-Pixel-Matrix displays.

I also listed the "rules" for 1957, 1961, and 2007 as reminders since you can customize the zones as needed; selecting them in the menu *does nothing*. I set the 1957 rules at 80%/80% even though there might be some question as to whether it was really 85%/85% in practice. Doesn't matter — it's just for grins ( 😉 ).

You can customize the zones with Action Safe % and Title Safe %. Select and type in the values for best accuracy. The range is from 50% to 100%. [This generator will not work for "non-standard" displays only HD and 4:3 like 720x480, 1440x1080, etc. I believe it will work for PAL displays as well since FCPX automagically fixes the pixel aspect ratio for the resolution (as it does with NTSC SD) and that will depend on your project settings.] If all you intend to work with is modern FPM HD format displays, then you should never need any other parameter than the Aspect. I will need to add more functionality for this to work with 2K+ displays that are not 16:9. (If you need this, let me know.)

You can leave this generator in place in the storyline and turn it off by selecting the generator and typing the 'V' key to toggle its visibility. Since this is a generator, the guide lines will be visible in the final output if left "on" (so unless you want that "effect" then remember to turn it off before exporting.)

If you need help installing a generator for FCPX, please see: http://fcpxtemplates.com/install4fcpx/latest.htm.
