Java vs. Java on El Capitan (Endless Update Notification)

I keep getting a Java update notification of El Capitan: "Java 8 Update 65 build 17 is available, you have Java 8 Update 51". I install the update, at it seem so succeed, but a day or two later I get the same notification.

I'm pretty sure I have installed both Apple's version of Java and Oracles. Is this a problem?

Oracle are pretty poor Mac programmers - this Applies to all their Mac projects e.g. MySQL, VirtualBox, and especially Java. I have seen previous issues relating to how and where they store version numbers in their software as an example, although Apple themselves with their own Java 6 installer are just as bad.

I would suggest that if the update process is not working properly that you download the latest full installer from http://www.java.com and try reinstalling the entire thing.

With regards to deleting the Java System Preference pane, this might stop the nag messages but it will mean you will not be able to install any further updates automatically and might as a result find one day not too far away that Apple have disabled the version of Java you currently have installed as a security risk.

Ok, thanks for that bit of info. I guess that means that (a) Oracle's Java can't properly do an update - tried that many time to get rid of that message and (b) Oracle's Java is not needed.

I have had some versions of Oracle's Java do successful updates but I currently use a different mechanism i.e. Munki to distribute such updates in our company.

Oracle's version of Java JRE was 1.7 and is now 1.8. Remember Apple's was/is still 1.6. Some Java applications particularly Java Development Environments requires a newer version of Java than 1.6. I believe for example that the widely used Eclipse IDE requires a minimum of Java JRE 1.7.
