Use
> Force Quit > select Safari.
then with the Shift key pressed, relaunch Safari.

Just not sure about all the shortcuts or how to bring up a "task manager" all those commands I knew on PC. I thought this was probably a scam, but it still concerns me that my Mac just freezes and I cannot do a thing other than power it off.

I wouldn't say "many" ... but the only significant concern is adware, for which I agree with your recommendation of MalwareBytes for Mac.
