I can't send or receive messages while I am on the phone

You mentioned that you can't send or receive messages while talking on your iPhone. There are a few things I'm wondering about this situation.

1. What happens when you try to send a message?
   
2. Are you sending SMS or iMessages?
   (If you're not sure, see Use Messages with your iPhone, iPad, or iPod touch)
   
3. What icon do you see to the right of your carrier's name in the status bar?
   For example a Wi-Fi icon, 4G icon, 3G icon.
   

This information will help us figure out what's going on.
