I have a hosts.equiv file in my /etc folder. Why?
I was checking my hosts file and in my /etc folder, I noticed a hosts.equiv file. I've never seen anything like that before on previous incarnations of my Macbook with Mavericks/Yosemite/etc, and I definitely don't have the knowledge or knowhow to use any sort of remote administration, which is apparently what the hosts.equiv file is used for.
I opened the equiv file with Text Edit and nothing is listed in it. Right clicking to access Get Info shows that it was created at the same time as my hosts file. Nothing in my hosts file seems out of place - it is listed exactly as it should be:
##
# Host Database
#
# localhost is used to configure the loopback interface
# when the system is booting. Do not change this entry.
##
127.0.0.1 localhost
255.255.255.255 broadcasthost
::1 localhost
The text cursor blinks exactly on the first space on the line exactly after the line starting with ::1.
I would just like to know if the mere existence of the hosts.equiv file means my machine may be potentially compromised?
