Preview on my Yosemite OS X 10.10.5 is not closing down and does not respond to Force Quit. As a result I cannot shut down the computer. In addition I cannot use Preview - window comes up saying it's not available or open.
Can I remove Preview from the computer and reinstall?

Use the power button to shutdown the computer and then restart. If things are the same, do a backup, preferable 2 separate ones on 2 drives. Boot to the Recovery Volume (command - R on a restart or hold down the option/alt key during a restart and select Recovery Volume). Run Disk Utility Verify/Repair Disk and Repair Permissions until you get no errors. Then re-install the OS.

Since Preview is part of the OS, you probably can't delete it.
Holding the power button for an extended amount of time will force the computer to shut down. Maybe a restart is all you need.
There is no stand-alone Preview.app to download, the entire OS X has to be reinstalled as stated above from the Recovery.
Many thanks, holding down the power button worked and a restart seems to have resolved the difficulty. I will though be very wary of using the Preview to look at photos and I use Adobe to look at pdfs.
