Q: Facetime Handoff stopped working since El Capitan

Hi

I am using a Macbook Pro (Mid 2014) and have recently updated to El Capitan Version 10.11 (15A284).

The facetime handoff used to work perfectly with my iphone 5 - I would call numbers from online, it would open in facetime (mac) and I could hit 'call' and the call would start on my iphone. It really helped because I usually have about 30 calls in the day to make so I could quickly do it without having to retype into my phone everytime.

But since I upgraded to El Capitan, it has stopped working. It just keeps saying this:

I have tried upgrading my iphone, have logged out of facetime on both iphone and mac, but still no luck. They are both signed into the same icloud account -

Is there a way I can get more info from why it isnt working? As I'm just guessing!

Or has anyone else experienced this since upgrading?

Make sure you've followed the instructions in this support article. Note that both iCloud and FaceTime on the Mac must be signed in to the same Apple ID; those are two separate steps. Also note that the Mac and the phone must be connected to the same Wi-Fi network. Ethernet won't work. Trying to pair the phone to the Mac as a Bluetooth device won't work either.

No Continuity feature will work if either of the devices is connected to a VPN.

If cellular calling still doesn't work, sign out of FaceTime and sign back in. You may have to do the same on the phone. The email address that you use as your Apple ID must be able to receive FaceTime calls.

I have not been able to get more than two devices, including other iOS devices, to be recognized as calling clients by an iPhone running iOS 9. I don't know of any documentation of that limit, but it seems to exist. If you have more than two clients, and some of them are intermittently reporting that the phone is not set up to allow calls, try reducing the total number of clients to one or two.

If you always get a "Call failed" notice when trying to make outgoing calls, then (according to a report) you may need to set a stronger password for your iCloud account. After doing that, sign out of iCloud and sign back in on all your devices.

    Hi Linc

Thanks! So I wonder if you / others can help me with the issue I'm having. I've followed everything in the guide but its still not working.

So I'm logged into the same wifi:

And I'm connected to the same account:

But they still fail. One thing I did notice, is that since El Capitan, the button that used to be here, to make a call, isnt anymore and it only offers me up SMS...
