can you put a 4gb ram with a 2gb ram in macbook pro 2009

I am looking to add more RAM space to my mid 2009 Macbook Pro (13 in). I am wondering if it's possible to add a 4gb ram space with the already installed 2gb? Will this cause issues if installed? I am having trouble finding 2gb for my Macbook and don't want to get a generic RAM incase of potential issues.

MacBook Pro, Mac OS X (10.6.8)

Thanks to you both.

I recently purchased 8gb from Best Buy, it looks like it has 2 slots but I only purchased one 8gb RAM. Here's the link http://www.bestbuy.ca/en-CA/product/crucial-crucial-8gb-ddr3-1600mhz-laptop-memo ry-for-mac-ct8g3s160bm-ct8g3s160bm/10243754.aspx?path=2cda857a4afdcf5f70cc66012f de8901en02 will this not work then? I will cancel my purchase if that's the case.

Csound1, checked out that link thank-you, if this best buy purchase is no good, I will purchase from there.

I bought it because it fit the specifications I needed. I'm not an IT person and I don't know much about the insides of the computer or laptop so that's why I'm a part of this community, to ask questions and learn something. I'm not trying to compromise anything, I'm aware that I have a precious item to take care of so please don't assume 🙂
