Q: Unable to logout of old apple ID

I got my first iPod about 8 years ago and created my first apple ID. For the past few years I have been struggling with disconnecting my iPhone from this old apple ID and getting it to sync with the new one. It hasn't caused much of an issue until today when I got my first MacBook. The issue is that I no longer have access to this old account and it is linked to an email address that is also inaccessible. I have tried countless times to logout of this old account on my iPhone and log into the new account but it somehow never works out. I am logged into the new account on my mac now and it's just causing a lot of issues with syncing music from my phone onto the new computer as I cannot get my phone to link to the same cloud. So if anyone has any ideas on how to fix this help would be much appreciated

    Hello s_hughes,

Thanks for using the Apple Support Communities!

I understand that you have an old Apple ID logged into your iPhone and need to log out so that you can sign in with your correct Apple ID. There are two different possible scenarios here that I will try to explain, neither of which require you to access the email address of the old Apple ID.

The first scenario would be if you simply just created a brand new Apple ID and actually have two Apple IDs, the old one and the new one. This would be the easiest scenario to manage because all you will need to do is sign out of that Apple ID on your iPhone.

If you do not know the password for that Apple ID, you can attempt to reset it using the following link. If you are unable to reset it yourself, you can use the contact Apple Support link in the Get more help section to contact us for assistance resetting the password.

The second scenario would be if you edited the old Apple ID to change it to the new email address. In this scenario, you only have one Apple ID because it was edited, but you are still signed in with the old email address as your Apple ID on your iPhone.

If this is the case, you will need to edit your Apple ID back to the old email address (no need to change password) and sign out on your iPhone. Once signed out, edit your Apple ID back to the current email address and sign back in. This process can be found in the next article’s Change your Apple ID temporarily section.

We know these types of situations can be frustrating, but I want to assure you that we are here to help. If you need further assistance, please let us know.

    Have a great day!
