Command - Delete won't work

I the old PC windows explorer days, going through lists of files and simply hitting delete on the keyboard was a breeze.

My delete key on my iMac won't do such a thing, and I read somewhere it has to be 'Command - Delete'. But this won't work either..

How do I delete files in Finder using the keyboard?

Hi J
I just tried this in my Finder and it worked for deleting files (at least moves them to the trash):

click one on the file to make sure it is highlighted,
hold down the apple key and press the delete key next to the plus sign.

on the stardard mac keyboard there are two 'delete' keys, one under the 'help' key and one next to the 'plus' key. Only the latter will work for this method.

If you are using a laptop the layout will be different but it still works.

Hope this helps

Thanks Nicky,

I tried this, but it only has the effect of making the file name 'editable'. Not sure how to explain this, its similar to pressing F2 in excel, to edit a cell. This is what happens when I press Apple key and delete key next to the plus sign.

Could it have to do with the fact that my keyboard is spanish? (ISO)

Thanks

Create a new account, name it "test" and see how your command-delete function works in that User acct? (That will tell if your problem is systemwide or limited to your User acct.) This account is just for test, do nothing further with it.

Open System Preferences >> Accounts >> "+" make it an admin account.

Let us know and we'll troubleshoot this further.

I have the same problem. Personally, I think hitting the delete key ought to do what it says: delete. It should delete whatever is selected.

Given that Apple doesn't think the delete key should delete, I would like to have the supported command, cmd-delete, delete things. How do I get support on this kind of thing? Maybe it's just a keyboard shortcut that somehow needs resetting. But I went to Preferences->keyboard shortcuts and I couldn't figure out how to fix it.

Another great idea would be for menu commands to also list their keyboard shortcuts. I'm sure I saw that somewhere 😉
