Q: Storage record
Hi,
I have a late 27" 2009 iMac with OS X 10.9.5 and am looking at transferring my 'photo's to a new external hard disc. I first checked to see how much storage the 'photos were taking up and found it was zero! I would add that I can see all my 'photos so they have not gone.
The bar chart showing the storage usage breakdown shows Audio/Movies/Photos/Apps/Back-ups all at zero (!!) and Others at 168.91 GB. The total is also 168.91 GB. When I check usage on my Macbook, which has Yosemite installed, each category of usage is taking up some of the storage. Is this difference in available storage information because Mavericks doe not allow the breakdown between uses and just lumps everything together as "Other".?
One other bit of information! My graphics card is fried, but I cannot see how this would effect the read out on my storage.
Many thanks

Hi crutchy,
Sorry to hear you are having this issue with your iMac. You may see this issue (all storage listed as Other, none in the individual categories) if you have started your machine up in Safe Mode. It may also happen if Spotlight is having an issue indexing or categorizing the file type. If this issue persists, you may find the information and steps outlined in the following articles helpful:
OS X: What is "other" space in About This Mac? - Apple Support
Spotlight: How to re-index folders or volumes - Apple Support
Cheers
