Q: El Capitan is rubbish

Since downloading this new operating system my computer seems to be slower than ever before. Whenever I clear out my cookies  - as I have always had to do to keep the dratted computer from crashing - and try to get back online, Safari tells me every time without fail that I am no longer connected to the internet and I have to go over to Firefox (which works first time - every time incidentally)  This morning I have now discovered that my version of Logic (Logic Express 9) doesn't seem to work with this operating system and has crashed 4 times out of 4 attempts to open a new file.

Perhaps Apple could come along and tell me in simple terms without any techno gobbldegook why this is happening, or is it as my cynicism would lead me to believe yet another attempt by Apple to part me from some more of my hard earned cash to upgrade my Logic and/or entire computer system. ?

As great as I think apple products are I have rapidly become VERY disillusioned with Apple the company's mercenary games to make themselves ever richer and if windows wasn't so rubbish I would seriously consider going back to it.

Use it now before you upgrade.

Not sure what you mean by "send it to them". You would run Etrecheck and copy the results into a post here in this thread.

I don't use any software except that which came with my mini-Mac and El Capitan works fine.  That may be the moral of the story.

Pretty sad if that's the solution.

You are then not getting the full value and benefit of owning the computer. There are many very good and beneficial programs available that increase productivity, enjoyment, and capability of your computer and computing experience.

And, how does one choose between "many very good and beneficial programs" and old, crappy software?

if a piece of software has a good rep, a solid support history and is an industry standard or popular for its quality within a specific group it's generally a safe bet.

If it popped up on an ad that told you your computer as infected from a browser window or a shady streaming site, or it fell off a back of a torrent then not so good.

How about this?  I download an app from the APP STORE! and my mini-Mac immediately goes into high fan mode and the constantly spinning pinwheel!

Thanks for all of the brilliant advice.  Forgive me if I don't take any more!

    Rubbish!

How old is your Mini? Have you checked on the health of the hard drive? Even the version of Disk Utility in El Cap ought to be able to tell you something about the hard drive.

It's not our fault it sounds like your computer is on its last legs.  Simply downloading something from the App Store shouldn't be such a chore.  Can you post an EtreCheck status report for your system so we can see what's on it?  Oh wait, you won't download that so we can see what's on your system and possibly be a help to you.  If you don't want to listen to our advice, fine, but on your own head be it.

Thanks for the lead to Etrecheck. Should I install El Capitan again or run Etrecheck on my present OS - Yosemite and send them the report??

Since you are now running Yosemite, it is a good idea to run Etrecheck before you update. Hopefully Etrecheck's report may help bring to light something that would cause your problems in El Capitan. As it happens it is mostly old software or drivers that cause problems with the update. Or people using "cleaner" software which is just crapware.

    Hello Luis -

I didn't think it necessary to start a new thread - and I hope no one thinks I'm stepping on this one. I have had a true computer slow-down since the installation of El Capitan. Three+ minutes waiting for my drive to open after clicking on it. Every program opened -- when I go to use them, are not responding. I saw this thread - I've download EtreCheck - and have the results...

Please help me - does this mean my drive is dying?
