Q: El Capitan is rubbish

Since downloading this new operating system my computer seems to be slower than ever before. Whenever I clear out my cookies  - as I have always had to do to keep the dratted computer from crashing - and try to get back online, Safari tells me every time without fail that I am no longer connected to the internet and I have to go over to Firefox (which works first time - every time incidentally)  This morning I have now discovered that my version of Logic (Logic Express 9) doesn't seem to work with this operating system and has crashed 4 times out of 4 attempts to open a new file.

Perhaps Apple could come along and tell me in simple terms without any techno gobbldegook why this is happening, or is it as my cynicism would lead me to believe yet another attempt by Apple to part me from some more of my hard earned cash to upgrade my Logic and/or entire computer system. ?

As great as I think apple products are I have rapidly become VERY disillusioned with Apple the company's mercenary games to make themselves ever richer and if windows wasn't so rubbish I would seriously consider going back to it.

If you didn't already, back up your data immediately and replace your drive. It is failing.

While you are about it, consider replacing it with an SSD. The difference in responsiveness is such that your mac will feel like new.

    Hello Luis -

I didn't think it necessary to start a new thread - and I hope no one thinks I'm stepping on this one. I have had a true computer slow-down since the installation of El Capitan. Three+ minutes waiting for my drive to open after clicking on it. Every program opened -- when I go to use them, are not responding. I saw this thread - I've download EtreCheck - and have the results...

Please help me - does this mean my drive is dying?

Quick question - do you think it worth it to get a new drive - or a new Mac?

Hard drives are cheaper than computers, so if your current computer isn't that old, just replace the drive and maybe upgrade the RAM if you can.  See if removing the malware infecting your system presents some kind of relief before you go down that road, however.

Luis and Pinkstones - I just want to thank you for being there this morning. I'm still working on the computer. I have McAfee scanning -- and the Apple Hard Drive utility says the hard drive is okay.

It's not perfect - but much better than this morning - I don't know how long it will take for the virus/malware scan to take -- I can tell you it took several hours to download - and said I quit. Needed a serial number - spoke to three persons, two in Customer Service and one in Tech - when I asked him to enunciate, he hung up the phone on me.

I don't know if you want further updates - but I'm postponing going to the Apple Store for now (though a new mouse might be in order...)

    Thank you.

McAfee will probably fail to find it, and will be incapable of removing it.

Post back after the scan completes.

McAfee, and any other AV software are completely, 100% worthless. There are no viruses in OS X, so there's nothing to find. What pinkstones noted were Trojans. As like any Trojan, they are installed by you in some way, and AV software will not stop them from getting on your Mac.

Do not believe Disk Utility (I presume that's what you mean by Apple Hard Drive utility). Per the report:

Disk Information: (What does this mean?)

        TOSHIBA MK5065GSXF disk0 : (500.11 GB) (Rotational)

            EFI (disk0s1) <not mounted> : 210 MB

            Macintosh HD (disk0s2) / : 499.25 GB (291.99 GB free) - 14 errors

    Drive failure!

EtreCheck does not make this stuff up. It's data created by OS X itself, and is then collected by the app and presented in a readable format. The drive is failing. Make a full backup ASAP and replace the drive.

McAfee isn't going to find the malware/adware that's on your computer.  Your choices are to remove it manually, which someone here can link you to the steps it'll take to do it, or you can download Malwarebytes Anti-Malware for Mac and have it do it for you.  There is no virus currently in the wild that can do any damage to OS X, so an anti-virus program isn't really necessary.

    Hello pinkstones,

Thanks for catching that. EtreCheck can detect some adware, but it is quickly falling behind.

EtreCheck uses Apple adware removal instructions (Stop pop-up ads and adware in Safari - Apple Support) to identify files that might be adware. I always recommend MalwareBytes to actually remove the adware because Apple's instructions are so bad. In addition, Apple's list is from August and that is a long time in the adware business. That is quickly making EtreCheck's adware detection virtually useless. There is no way I'm going to try to keep track of adware and malware myself. That's not the business I want to be in.

    Please help one more time.

I stopped the scan then stopped by my friendly Apple dealer. They suggested I buy a drive and bring it to them to install. They told me to look on Amazon that the SSD drives are on sale.

They wrote for me to look for a 2.5 inch ATA or SATA drive.

IS that an SSD? What brand would you buy? I'm just not seeing them online

    thanks

PS they said to keep the computer -- it's a good one.

    Pink - THANK YOU

I have removed all the malware on the computer (Kurt thanks for finding one the others didn't see -- )

I re-ran the EtraCheck and when it comes to the drive it now reads (in all black)

Disk Information: (What does this mean?)

        TOSHIBA MK5065GSXF disk0 : (500.11 GB) (Rotational)

            Recovery HD (disk0s3) <not mounted>  [Recovery]: 650 MB

The only Red Item - is a startup left over from Yosemite...

Still a bit slow - but functioning - will need to see what else I can do to get it perky again.

You need to get rid of the following programs:

    • Sophos
    • Trusteer
    • AVG Link Scanner
    • CleanMyMac

The latter of that list is fraudulent garbage and you should never, NEVER let it within 50 light years of your computer.  You also need to get rid of that "SaveFrom.net Helper," because while it's a legitimate extension, it has a reputation for funneling malware/adware onto your computer and you don't need it.
