Q: New Apple TV 4th Gen not updating iTunes play count

just got my new Apple TV 4th gen and using it to home share my iTunes music collection like I used to with my previous Apple TVs however on a song is played it is not updating the play count in iTunes. Previous Apple TVs have done this. I have checked all my settings and cannot get it to update my play counts. Is this a bug? Any suggestions people?

Yea. Just installed and tried it myself and still no play count or last played update on iTunes when using Home Sharing. Basic functionality. Guess my Apple TV 4th gen will continue to be a dust gatherer until they fix this. Disappointing service from Apple.

I've just been informed by someone this is resolved now? Is this true? When was it resolved?

Still doesn't work for me.  Tested with tvOS 9.1, iTunes 12.3.2, verified "home sharing updates play counts" is checked.

And still working perfectly and instantly with the AppleTV 3.

Home Sharing has never updated play counts on my iTunes server from any iTunes client (ATV4, ATV3, or MBPro/iTunes client).

I have tried it with many versions of iTunes between 2 macs.

I tried when I got my ATV3 a year ago.

Also tried it with my new ATV4 a couple weeks ago.

    Never had success.

Like many, I've confirmed many times (unchecked and rechecked) the iTunes preferences to update play counts from clients.

I had submitted a bug report when I first encountered the problem ( i think a couple years ago).

When new versions of software come out, I try it again each time, but it has never worked.  So I abandoned HS and just plug in my iPod when I want to listen to media on other computers than my iTunes server (I have more than one mac)...

My iTunes server dedicated mac connected directly to my stereo and TV.  so it is plugged directly into the TV HDMI and stereo thru audio jack, and I play directly from the mac without using ATV.

I was explaining my issue in another tread, and Winston replied and mentioned that this issue was showing up in other posts.  (thanks Winston!)

So, I'm adding to the chorus for whom it is not working.

    Good Luck to everyone!

That wasn't quite my intention to leave you with that impression. I linked you to this discussion to show you that others had no issues with play counts on previous Apple TV's and that your experience that Play count doesn't work on any device is certainly not a common experience.

Been doing some more searching for solutions to this problem and found a lot of talk about resetting your authorised computers which may reset Home Sharing. Do you think it's worth de-authorising all computers and then re-authorising the one you currently use and the Apple TV you currently use? Clutching at straws here but it could work. Or not.

I've not heard of this and can't really see a way in which this would help, but hey, who knows. Please bear in mind though that you can only de-authorise all computers once every 12 months. The Apple TV isn't an authorised device and isn't supposed to count as an associated device.

    Well, it didn't work

Hoping Apple push out a fix sooner rather than later.

I've logged the issue with the Bug Reporter and it has come back as a duplicate of Issue 20754447

How do I read the info on this bug report and check the status of it?

You need to be a developer - https://bugreport.apple.com/

Several of us have reported the bug.  They got marked as a duplicate and closed.  So, they have known about it since the launch.  Just haven't bothered to fix it yet.

Before anyone gets their hopes up, no, the 9.1.1 update that came out today does not fix it.

    Unbelievable.

At the top of this thread it says it was "branched to a new discussion" but when I click that link it says I don't have permission to view it.  Anyone know what that is all about?
