10.11.1 update erased all apps

So the automatic update for 10.11.1 happens especially this morning and it literally wipes all applications out even though they are still using up disk space. When I open an application shortcut it says "You can't open the application "app name" because it may be damaged or incomplete." It says thishe even for OSX bundled apps like Safari and th he Apple Store. However if I goto About This Mac it says I have 35gb of apps. Also if I click on the the Software Update button it appears to open the App Store. ***... Did Apple do any quality control testing before releasing this? I need a fix immediately as my life line for work has just been severed.

Launch the Console application in any of the following ways:

☞ Enter the first few letters of its name into a Spotlight search. Select it in the results (it should be at the top.)

☞ In the Finder, select Go ▹ Utilities from the menu bar, or press the key combination shift-command-U. The application is in the folder that opens.

☞ Open LaunchPad and start typing the name.

The title of the Console window should be All Messages. If it isn't, select

SYSTEM LOG QUERIES ▹ All Messages

from the log list on the left. If you don't see that list, select

View ▹ Show Log List

from the menu bar at the top of the screen.

Click the Clear Display icon in the toolbar. Then take an action that isn't working the way you expect. Select any lines that appear in the Console window. Copy them to the Clipboard by pressing the key combination command-C. Paste into a reply to this message by pressing command-V.

The log contains a vast amount of information, almost all of which is irrelevant to solving any particular problem. When posting a log extract, be selective. A few dozen lines are almost always more than enough.

Please don't indiscriminately dump thousands of lines from the log into this discussion.

Please don't post screenshots of log messages—post the text.

Some private information, such as your name or email address, may appear in the log. Anonymize before posting.

When you post the log extract, you might see an error message on the web page: "You have included content in your post that is not permitted," or "The message contains invalid characters." That's a bug in the forum software. Please post the text on Pastebin, then post a link here to the page you created.

No can do. There's no bloody console application. It says "You can't open the application "Console" because it may be damaged or incomplete.". Can't open Launchpad for the same reason. And spotlight won't open it either. Is there another way?


Literally all apps are wiped out. My guess is this update moved all the applications to another location that for some reason I can access via system screens. For example Firefox opened since it is my default browser when I clicked on the OSX Support from the "About This Mac" but if I tried to open it from any other way it will not.

Please read this whole message before doing anything.

This procedure is a diagnostic test. It’s unlikely to solve your problem. Don’t be disappointed when you find that nothing has changed after you complete it.

The purpose of the test is to determine whether the problem is caused by third-party software that loads automatically at startup or login, by a peripheral device, by a font conflict, or by corruption of the file system or of certain system caches.

Disconnect all wired peripherals except those needed for the test, and remove all aftermarket expansion cards, if applicable. Start up in safe mode and log in to the account with the problem.

Note: If FileVault is enabled in OS X 10.9 or earlier, or if a firmware password is set, or if the startup volume is a software RAID, you can’t do this. Ask for further instructions.

Safe mode is much slower to start up and run than normal, with limited graphics performance, and some things won’t work at all, including sound output and Wi-Fi on certain models. The next normal startup may also be somewhat slow.

The login screen appears even if you usually login automatically. You must know your login password in order to log in. If you’ve forgotten the password, you will need to reset it before you begin.

Test while in safe mode by opening the Applications folder in the Finder and double-clicking the app icons. Same problem?

After testing, restart as usual (not in safe mode) and verify that you still have the problem. Post the results of the test.

I suggest starting up from the Recovery System (the command + R restart), choosing Disk Utility from the four options in the window, & running First Aid on your normal startup volume (usually named Macintosh HD). Wait for that to finish & restart normally.


If that doesn't fix your issue, you may need to reinstall the system, which you can also do from the Recovery System.

If you don't already have a current backup, back up all data, then reinstall the OS.* You don't need to erase the startup volume, and you won't need the backup unless something goes wrong. If the system was upgraded from an older version of OS X, you may need the Apple ID and password you used.

There are ways to back up a computer that isn't fully functional. Ask if you need guidance.

If you installed the Java runtime distributed by Apple and still need it, you'll have to reinstall it. The same goes for Xcode. All other data will be preserved.

*The linked support article refers to OS X 10.11 ("El Capitan"), but the procedure is the same for OS X 10.7 ("Lion") and later.

I just reinstalled the OS and all the apps are still missing yet there. For example Firefox is not in the applications directory but when I goto About This Mac > Support > OS X Support then Firefox opens. Same is true for all the applications from the dock, they wont open because they can be found. So something is seriously disjointed in the OS after the 10.11.1 update.


So problem is not yet resolved. Something tells me OSX is hosed.

Although the problem is not the same, please follow the instructions in this support article to reset the Launch Services database. Instead of typing the shell command directed in the article, I suggest that you copy and paste it from the web page into the Terminal window. Make sure you select the whole line. One way to do that is by triple-clicking anywhere in the line.

If you don't already have a current backup, back up all data before proceeding. You may have to log out or restart to see a change.

I connect via the same machine using Firefox. As previously explained.


I never ran the script from terminal but after the 100th time restarting, suddenly the apps are back. No logic what so ever. The icons are still missing but as I open the apps one by one they reappear.


Going to run CleanMyMac to clean up anymore issues since it does a pretty good job of that.

Strange!

You just restarted several times in a loop?

I restared at least 15 times and swapped between accounts back and forth at least 20 times but no luck whatsoever.

I even tried restoring from time machine only application folder but I got a message that application folder is used by system cannot be deleted...

Is it possible that after the upgrade the application folder is being indexed or processed by any means?

I will try again updating after restoration complete, it seems that the restore process will not take 6h as it estimated at he beginning, as after 1:30h I have still 36 minutes to go. Run forest!
