Q: How can I run software from a unidentified developer?

I attempted to run Java in my investment software, but I keep getting the following warning:

So I looked at my Safari settings to make sure Java was allowed:

Is there another security setting that allows Java script to run?

iMac (21.5-inch Mid 2011), OS X El Capitan (10.11)

Control-click it and choose Open if it's possible to do so. Alternatively, open the Security & Privacy pane of System Preferences, click on the General tab, unlock the pane, and set it to allow applications from anywhere.

Security & Privacy settings will allow gatekeeper to make a one time change to an unidentified developers software to allow it to continually run or you can set it in the General tab:

    Allow apps download from :

unlock panel and change to Anywhere

Allow from anywhere is not recommended for security reasons.

Your better bet is "App Store & identified developers,"  as pointed out above,

simply control click (right click) to open the app you are pursuing. This puts you at a minimum risk.

I agree it does add a layer of security but it does not take into account legacy installers and viable software. Apples official document explains better than I can

OS X: About Gatekeeper - Apple Support

but Apple made no attempt to hide this function - plus it throws up a warning when you select it - you should proceed as you see fit as long as you know what the caveats are.

One thing I did not know and this is pretty cool actually:

Developer ID-signed apps that have been inappropriately altered will not open, even with this option selected.
