MathType on El Capitan

I'm trying to insert a MathType equation into Pages 5.6 with no luck. I can't insert an equation, nor can I edit existing ones.

First I thought that it was because I am using MathType Lite and not MathType, but then I realized that I've been able to insert MathType equations since my 30-day trial was up.

Then I thought that it was because I opened MathType after Pages, which I had seen causes trouble. Although I've never had that problem before, I decided to humor myself and try that with no luck.

Since I'm running MathType Lite, I don't have the option of saving my equation and inserting it into Pages the long way.

The only other option, it seems, is that MathType is not compatible with El Capitan. Does anyone know of a way around this? Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thanks in advance. 🙂

Hello there Lego Fan,

I don't see which specific release of MathType 6.7 you're using. It's the 6.7h release that's current, and compatibility with Pages 5.6 requires 6.7g or later. In fact, for new installations, releases earlier than 6.7g won't even install in Yosemite or later. It's possible to upgrade to El Capitan with an earlier release of MathType still running, but if you ever needed to reinstall it, you wouldn't be able to do so. MathType 6.7h is compatible with El Capitan.

So, that's a long way around to ask you to confirm which MathType 6.7 release you're using. (Check the About MathType screen in the MathType menu if you're unsure.)

You have the correct sequence -- open MathType first, then use the Insert MathType Equation command. Don't try to copy & paste, even if you DO have the latest release of MathType.

I check this forum once a day M-F, but now that I've replied to this topic, I'll get email updates.

Hmm. Would you mind continuing this conversation via email -- at support@dessci.com? I don't mind coming back here to summarize what the solution was, but I think we can be more effective by email. Here are the important points that we already know, but please re-state in the email because I may not be the one who answers the email:

  • Configuration: OS X 10.11 El Capitan, Pages 5.6, MathType 6.7h (which, I believe, is MathType Lite, correct?)
  • You're opening MathType first, then opening Pages. (Although it's only required to open MathType before using the Insert command, not necessarily before opening Pages.)
  • You're opening MathType with the MathType Equation command on the Insert menu in Pages.
  • You can't edit equations in existing documents by double-clicking the equations.

Here's what I don't yet know, the answers to which you should also include in the email:

  • You said "I can't insert an equation, nor can I edit existing ones." What I don't know is what exactly that means. I think it means that when you try to insert an equation, it's the case that simply nothing happens. Same with double-clicking an existing equation. You double-click and don't get any error messages or beeps, but nothing happens at all. Is that correct, or when you double-click does the equation open in MathType but it doesn't save any edits?
  • One thing I haven't asked is what do you do to get the equation into the document after you create the equation in MathType? The proper way (since you're opening MathType with the Insert command) is to close the MathType window by clicking the red "stop light" in the upper left corner (or by using the functional equivalent -- either the Command+W shortcut or the command File > Close and Return to Pages).
  • Open a Pages document. Single-click any equation to select it. In the Inspector pane, click on the Image tab. Beneath File Info at the top, does it say "MathTypeImage.pdf", or something like "Image9.pdf"?
  • Are you using Word at all -- perhaps to open a document in Pages that was created in Word?

Thanks
