How to configure Apple Airport Extreme to wake on demand

My set up is as follows:

I have a wireless router through my internet provider. A Mac Mini, which I want to access from my Apple TV 3 when needed.

I just got my hands on an older model Airport Extreme base station.

I'd like to configure this set up so that my Apple TV can wake up my Mac Mini and stream via home sharing.

The mac mini I have seems to only support wake for Ethernet access.

Questions:

1. Do I need to set up the airport extreme as a new router, or is extender suffice?

2. Does the mac mini need to be plugged in to the airport, via Ethernet?

3. Does the apple tv need to be plugged in to the airport? Or anything at all?

I really want to get this set up, because if it works the way I understand it should, it would be pretty slick!

Any help is appreciated!

Mac mini, iOS 7
